Detailing is generally divided into two categories: exterior and interior (or cabin). There are products and services that focus on these two areas in particular.
Exterior detail involves cleaning, and either recovering or surpassing the original surface condition of the car (usually paint with glossy finish), chrome trim, windows, wheels and tires, and other components seen on the exterior of the vehicle. A wide variety of product and engineering details are used, based on the type and condition of the vehicle surface, or the detailer preferences. The product includes, but is not limited to: detergents and acid-free degreasers (for breaking dirt and soils), detailed clay (to remove embedded contamination), wax, glow, and polish (to bring back and then increase reflectivity, or to provide tires shine), as well as various applicators, brushes, and towel dryers.
Detail interior involves cleaning the entire interior cabin. The interior of vehicles from the last 50 years consists of various materials, such as synthetic carpet coatings, vinyl, leather, various natural fibers, carbon fiber composites, plastics, and others, which require the use of various cleaning techniques and products. Vacuuming is standard, and coating stains can be removed using vapor cleaners, liquids and foam chemicals, as well as brushes. In addition, some non-gravel surfaces can be polished.

The detailed process area, usually does not include corrective actions such as repair of the main body workshop, but may be limited to paint restoration via double action or scouring rotator to remove the whirl marks in the paint.
