metallic colors are colors that look like polished metal. The visual sensation normally associated with metal is its metallic luster. It can not be reproduced in simple solid colors, because the shiny effect is due to the brightness of the material that varies with the surface angle to the light source. In addition, there is no mechanism to show metallic or fluorescent colors on a computer without using software that simulates the action of light on a shiny surface. Consequently in art and on the one emblem will usually use metallic paint that is shiny like the original metal.
For example, to create a painting that gives the impression of gold appearing in a painting, metallic paint glistening in the original gold approximation will be used; solid color is not aesthetically "read" as gold. Particularly in the sacred art in Christian churches, real gold (like gold leaf) is used to make gold in paintings, for example for halo saints. Gold can also be woven into silk sheets to give the traditional look of East Asia. Newer art styles, such as art nouveau, also use shining metallic gold. However, the metal coating of the paint is added using fine aluminum powder and pigment instead of the original gold.
The use of metallic colors is not limited to the colors that approximate the appearance of the actual metal. In some cases, it has been noted, "[b] fiery with bright metallic colors made into tie pins and cuff links". One of the popular uses of modern metallic colors is for cars, which use metallic paint to achieve a certain luster. Such colors "are made from a combination of various pigments and aluminum flakes that have different particle weights and sizes". Crayon-maker Crayola has produced several "metallic" product lines, including "Metallic FX" crayons, and "Color Metallic Color" pencils, which have sparkling spots to achieve metallic effects.
