Creativity and influence
As a fan of science fiction and space travel, the developers at tri-Ace created the Star Ocean series with sci-fi settings in mind and have called Star Trek as one of the influences their main for visual gameplay as well as its underlying, but real, influence on this series as a whole. While the first Star Ocean game includes more fantasy elements to attract a wide audience, the next installment naturally moves towards a more science-fiction-oriented nuance, with Star Ocean: Until The End of Time Maps Star Ocean
Design
Star Ocean is known for their real-time battle machines, and, to be one of the first of its kind to come to the console. The battle takes place on a separate screen, but all characters (rather than waiting in one place and taking damage) are fully mobile in three dimensions, can avoid and chase enemies, and have to cast spells and spread the attacks despite enemy harassment. In previous games, magicians have spells, while fighters have special physical attacks called "Killer Movement"; both are learned after meeting certain level requirements (or through certain items and sidequest) and HP or MP costs to use. In Star Ocean: Until The End of Time , all characters can use spells and fighting skills (ie killer movements).
The series is also known as some of the earliest action RPGs that allow players to alter the outcome of the story line through player actions and dialogue choices, especially through a social relations system known as "personal acts". The original Star Ocean, published by Enix in 1996, introduces a social system of "personal action", in which the relationship of the protagonist to another character is influenced by the choice of player, which in turn affects the plot, leading to the path branching and different endings. It expanded in its 1999 sequel, Star Ocean: The Second Story, which boasted as many as 86 different ends, with each possible permutation for this suffix numbering in the hundreds, setting the benchmark for the number of possible outcomes for the game videos. Using a relationship system inspired by dating sims, each character has a friendship point and relationship points with each other character, allowing players to pair, or send, each pair (both heterosexual and romantic relationships) of their choice, allowing the form fan fiction is in the game itself. However, the relationship system in Star Ocean not only affects the storyline, but also the gameplay, influences the way characters behave to each other in combat.
Star Ocean games also take a thorough approach to the items. Party members can create new objects or enhance existing ones through crafts such as metalworking, alchemy, writing, painting and cooking. The strongest items and equipment are usually only available through Item Creation, and many others can be sold for profit or other benefits (books can be used to transfer skills and abilities; cooked food can be used to avoid 20-each inventory limitations) , puts great importance on Goods Creation.
The characters of this series are designed to be "action-figure-like". A feature that adjusts the appearance of characters when replacing their equipment is considered for the series but is eventually removed due to its many characters to design. However, in the next installment of Star Ocean: The Last Hope , the character's appearance actually changes to reflect the type of weapon they use.
Finally, the two second and third games are somewhat renowned for changing the names of characters whose names contain religious references, which some fans find unusual in light of recent associations with Square and other RPGs (most famous Xenogears ) does not remove such a reference.
Star Ocean Gameplay is often compared to Namco's Tales series of video games by coincidence: after the release of Tales of Phantasia practically all design departments left and set up a tri-Ace. Consequently, many consider Star Ocean genuine as the 'spiritual sequel' of Tales of Phantasia; comments that can traditionally be found on fan sites depicting the first title in this series.
