The Monarch of the Glen is a red deer oil-in-canvas painting completed in 1851 by the English painter Sir Edwin Landseer. It was commissioned as part of a series of three panels to hang at Westminster Palace in London. As one of the most popular paintings throughout the 19th century, it was sold widely in reproductions of steel carvings, and was eventually purchased by companies for use in advertising. It had become a cliche in the mid-twentieth century, as "the picture of a lead of the Scottish main biscuit: a large deer perched against the purple hills and a watery sky of an isolated desert", according to the Sunday of the Herald.

The deer has twelve points on his horn, which in terminology deer makes him "royal deer" but not "deer king", which sixteen points are required.

In 2017 the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh launched a successful campaign to buy paintings worth Ã, Â £ 4 million, eventually achieving the acquisition. This painting is now a part of the collection, and is on display at the National Gallery of Scotland in Room 12.

History

Landseer is a member of the Royal Academy, Queen Victoria's favorite, and became famous for his paintings and drawings of animals. His later works include lion statues at the foot of Nelson's Column at Trafalgar Square. From the 1840s, he produced a series of extremely complicated stags studies based on what he saw on his journey to the Scottish Highlands since 1824. In 1850, Landseer received a national commission to paint three subjects related to the chase for Space Refresher House of Lords, where he produced the Monarch of the Glen and two other paintings. After they were done, the House of Commons refused to give Ã, Â £ 150 promised to the commission, and as a result, the paintings were sold to private collectors. It has been claimed that the landscape setting shows Glen Affric.

It was exhibited in London in 1851, 1874 and 1890. From William Denison's collection, 1 Earl of Londesborough passed in 1884 to Henry Eaton, 1st Baron Cheylesmore after his death in 1891 he realized Ã, Â £ 7,245 on sale at Christie's in May 1892, where it was purchased by Agnew, which was sold back to T. Barratt for £ 8,000. In 1916 he sold it back at Christie's for £ 5,250. The price in 1892 was the highest made by Landseer before the 1960s, with the exception of the reported price of Ã, Â £ 10,000 in private sales of The Otter Hunt in 1873, which would then represent the price the highest ever paid for British paintings.

The painting was purchased in 1916 by the Pears soap company and featured in their ad. It's sold to John Dewar & amp; The children distill and become their trademark before the same is used by Glenfiddich. The painting was later obtained as part of the purchase of Dewar by Diageo. In 1997 Diageo sold Dewar's to Bacardi but this did not include supporting assets. Diageo then loaned the painting to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

On November 2nd, 2016, Diageo announced their intention to sell the painting, as they stated that "there is no direct link to our business or brand". The National Gallery of Scotland offered the painting, worth  £ 8 million, with half this price, if they can raise  £ 4 million as needed. A campaign was then launched to raise funds, which worked.

Modern derivatives and company logo

The painting has been an inspiration for the logo and principles of the founding of a particular company. The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., a US insurance company, is taken directly from this painting, as does Exmoor Ales.

NestlÃÆ' Â © Waters Deer Park Spring Water in North America uses a reverse image of a different logo.

The legend of the company made him the first President of the Cream and Butter Association Challenge, J.P. Murphy, now Challenge Dairy of California, chose the name of the mural variations, depicted in the company's current logo.

In 2012 Peter Saville collaborated with Edinburgh Dovecot Studios in their hundredth anniversary celebration to create a large-scale tapestry of his After After, After Monarch of the Glen. This new tapestry commission is Dovecot Studios who accepted the appropriation of Peter Saville from Sir Peter Blake's use of Sir Edwin Landseer's 1851, Monarch of the Glen. Dovecot Studios has assembled a new rug from the design of Peter Saville, thus joining the artists who have reinterpreted this British masterpiece.

Glenfiddich single malt Scotch whiskey has been using variations of deer Landseer images on their logo since 1968.

The painting has also been used on the label of the soup of Baxter Kingdom's soup in England.
