A popcorn ceiling (slang), also known as ceiling cottage cheese , ceiling ceiling or formally an acoustic ceiling, is a ceiling with a specific spray or paint-on treatment. It is the standard for a bedroom and residential hallway ceiling due to its bright white appearance, the ability to hide imperfections, and acoustic characteristics. By comparison, the kitchen and living room ceilings will usually be finished in subtle curves or orange peel texture for their higher durability and ease of cleaning.

In the initial formulation, it often contains white asbestos fibers. When asbestos was banned in the care ceiling by the Clean Air Act of 1978 in the United States, popcorn ceilings fell out of favor in most countries. However, in order to minimize the economic hardships for suppliers and installers, the existing stock of asbestos-retaining materials is liberated from restrictions, making it possible to find asbestos on the popcorn ceilings that were applied during the 1980s. After the ban, the popcorn ceiling material was made using paper or Styrofoam-based products to create textures, not asbestos. Textured ceiling remains common in residential construction in the United States.
