The Apotheosis of Washington is a wall painting painted by the Greek-Italian artist Constantino Brumidi in 1865 and is seen through the oculus dome in the rotunda of the Capitol Building of the United States. The fresco is suspended 180 feet (55 m) above the rotunda floor and covers an area of ââ4,664 square feet (433.3 m 2 ). The painted figures are up to 15 feet (4.6 m) tall and visible from the lower floors. The dome was completed in 1863, and Brumidi painted it for 11 months at the end of the Civil War. He paid $ 40,000 ($ 639,478 in today's funds) for frescoes.
Brumidi has worked for three years at the Vatican under Pope Gregory XVI, and serves several aristocrats as artists for castles and villas, including the prince of Torlonia. He immigrated to the United States in 1852, and spent most of the last 25 years of his life working on the Capitol. In addition to The Apotheosis of Washington he designed the Brumidi Corridors.

Symbolism
The Apotheosis of Washington describes George Washington sitting between the sky in a great way, or in the literal sense, rising and becoming a deity. Washington, the first US president and supreme commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, was represented allegorically, surrounded by figures from classical mythology. Washington is wrapped in purple, the color of the kingdom, with a rainbow arch on his feet, flanked by the Victorian goddess (wrapped in green, using horns) to his left and the Goddess of Freedom on his right. The freedom of wearing a red Phrygian hat, symbolizing emancipation, from the Roman tradition in which children leaving home and/or freed slaves will be given a red hat. He holds the fasces in his right hand and an open book in the other hand.
Shaping a circle between Liberty and Victory are 13 girls, each with a star on its head, representing 13 original colonies. Some of the girls turned to Washington, who is said to represent the colonies that broke away from Union at the time of painting. Overturned over Washington is a banner of E Pluribus Unum which means "of many, one".
Surrounding Washington, two goddesses and 13 girls are six scenes that line the perimeter, each representing an allegorical national concept: from directly under Washington at the center and moving clockwise, "War," "Science," "The Sea," " Trade, "" Mechanics, "and" Agriculture ". The perimeter scene is not fully visible from the Capitol floor.
