History
This union comes from the Manchester Alliance Housing Alliance , which was founded in 1856, loosely grouped with several local unions based around Manchester. It underwent numerous name changes before it emerged in 1886 as the closer House and House Decorator The Amalgamated Society of National Operational Painters and Decorators . It joined the Amalgamated Society of the House of Decorators and Painters and several smaller unions in 1904, to form the Amalgamated National Society of Household and Ship Decorators and Decorators ( NASOHASPAD ). At some point in the 1930s or 1940s, it shortened its name to National Society of Painters .
In 1961, the union absorbed the Scottish Artist Association and the Birkdale Household Painters 'Association and Birkdale to form the Amalgamation Painters and Decorations Society, but in 1970 joined the Division of Frilled Wood Workers, forming the Choppy Wood Workers' Association and Decorators.
