Construction
The foundation was laid on July 16, 1816, with construction beginning thereafter. Materials used for construction are found in nearby areas. The architect and builder is John Rogers from Baltimore. In 1819 it was quite complete for the Mass to be held. The interior was fully equipped in 1823. Many paintings and interior decorations were donated by Pope Leo XII, King Louis-Philippe of France and others. The gifts of the King of France include paintings by Murillo, Van Dyke and others. The royal embroidered gown robe - the work of the queen's hands and his palace - and the sacramental ship were also made.

Painting from King Francis I of Two Sicily
The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, Mattia Preti, was painted in Naples circa 1650. In the early 19th century, King Francis I of Two Sicily made a drawing to the Saint Joseph Proto-Cathedral in Bardstown, Kentucky, where it remains to this day. After years of misguided ignorance and recovery (including painting a complete surface in the 1950s), the image was sent to Getty for a care and development plan. Two tough years of work have restored the image, and the tremendous character and qualities of the original are once again visible. The painting was returned to Bardstown in time to be ordained Proto-Cathedral as a Basilica in August 2002.
Historical sense
The cathedral proto-cathedral is the first Catholic Cathedral to the west of the Allegheny Mountains. On January 9, 1974, the proto-cathedral was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On June 3, 1976, the list was expanded to include Spalding Hall and adjacent Flaget Hall, originally St. Joseph College.
Over time, the runway location disappeared, until 1980 when it was discovered during the restoration of parts of the building.
On July 18, 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him to honor a small basilica church and an umbraculum mounted on the altar.
Bardstown diocese
Bardstown diocese was founded into Episcopal, April 8, 1808, by the Holy See. This diocese is the first inland diocese in the United States. The primal view or proto-diocese of the United States, the Diocese of Baltimore, is divided into the dioceses of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Bardstown (Baltimore being the Archdiocese of Baltimore).
The See of Bardstown diocese was moved to Louisville in 1841, and St. Joseph was replaced as Cathedral by St. Louis (now Assumption Cathedral) on Fifth Street in Downtown Louisville. Therefore St. Joseph became the first "proto" or cathedral. Louisville diocese was appointed to the Archdiocese in 1939.
In 1995, the Holy See honored proto-cathedral by naming retired Bishop Charles G. Maloney, Bishop of Tituler Bardstown. Maloney died on 30 April 2006. He was succeeded by Bishop Daniel E. Thomas on June 8, 2006.
