Biography

The blue sky was born on September 18, 1938, in Columbia, South Carolina, as Warren Edward Johnson. In 1954, his first foray into the art world won him a national poster competition two years before he graduated from Dreher High School. For the next six years, he served as a jet aircraft technician at Air National Guard, 169th Cameron Squad, while working on several different jobs to pay for college - as a float parade, layout artist, and dance instructor, among others.

Sky attended the University of South Carolina from 1958 to 1964. During this time, he received instructions from Ash Be Can painter Ed Yaghjian. In the meantime, he sold original works through an art auction of USC students at McMaster College. While attending the University of South Carolina, Johnson spoke out against the use of federal forces to integrate schools in the South. In the October 5, 1962 edition of The Gamecock under the section, Student Expression , Johnson commented, "Have the leaders of this country been so blind to think that the traditional hard way from the South can be forcibly destroyed... If I were in Mississippi, I would be at the forefront of the students rioting. "At the Springs Mills Show in 1964, where more than 700 artists participated, he was rated the" best show " by Henry Geldzahler, curator of modern art at the Metropolitan Museum, and was invited to study at the Art Students League of New York, where he lived and worked for the following year.

Upon returning to Columbia in 1966, Sky worked as a draftsman and conceptual artist for Wilbur Smith & amp; Partner before returning to USC for graduate school. In 1970, he graduated, earned his Master of Education degree, because the university has not received the Master of Fine Arts certification.

In 1974, Sky officially changed its name from Warren Edward Johnson to Blue Sky. He signed the painting before this year with the abbreviation "WAR."

In 2000, Sky was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina's highest civilian state award, for his contribution to art - in particular, to paint the country's first large-scale public mural in 1975.

Careers

The sky has been fully supported by his art since 1970. Although he may be best known for his public art, many of his public projects are self-funded, and his life is gained primarily through the sale of original artwork through Blue Sky Gallery at the Arcade Mall. Blue Sky Gallery opened the gallery at Five Points in 1981, and it was there that he displayed his artwork exclusively until 2017, before moving to his new location. Tunnelvision (1975)

Moments after graduation Sky is interested in painting a mural on the wall 34,006753 Â ° N 81,03203 Â ° W / 34,006753; -81,03203 from the Federal Land Bank in Columbia. He applied to the Arts Commission of South Carolina several times before they accepted the draft concept for Tunnelvision and told him to approach the Federal Land Bank for funding. The bank refuses to fund the project, but agrees to grant him permission to use the wall on condition that he is not a communist (see: Diego Rivera).

Sky claims that the idea for Tunnelvision appears to him in a dream (as the title suggests). Although the work is technically given in the style of trompe-l'oeil , Sky intends the mural to have a spiritual impact as well; a 'window' for transcendental reality. Sky has restored and completely repainted the mural five times, and each version displays at least one new element to expand the metaphor; for example, the latest addition, a road sign that says, "One Way."

Tunnelvision can be considered a masterpiece of Sky in the classical sense, because the mural is part of the juvenile and the work that has earned him the widest recognition, beginning with an article in the February 1976 issue of People Magazine. There was a rumor that some drunk drivers were trying to get into the tunnel.
