Electrostatic coating is a manufacturing process that uses charged particles to paint workpieces more efficiently. Paints, in the form of powdered particles or diluted liquids, are initially projected onto conductive workpieces using normal spraying methods, and then accelerated to workpieces with a strong electrostatic charge.

Addition to the electrostatic coating process (or e-coating) is to dip the electrically conductive part into the paint tank which is then filled electrostatically. The ion bond from paint to metal creates a layer of paint, where its thickness is directly proportional to the length of time the remaining parts are in the tank and the time of charge remains active. After the parts are removed from the paint tank, they are rinsed to remove the remaining uncoated paint, leaving a thin layer of electrostatic bonded paint on the surface of the section.

Process characteristics

  • Using high voltage electrostatic charge applied to both the workpiece and the spray mechanism
  • Using 95% paint sprayed for better over-spray reduction and wrapping
  • The paint can be either powdered or liquid
  • The process can be either automatic or manual
  • Workpiece must be conductive
  • Workpieces are usually baked after coating
  • Roasted cat is very well attached and difficult to remove without aggressive removal tool.

Process

Workpiece walks down a conveyor belt toward a paint stand, or paint tank, where it is sprayed with, or dipped in, electrostatically filled paint particles. Integrated into the powder paint chamber is a powder recovery unit, which recovers between 95% and 100% overgrown paint. After the workpiece is coated, he continues on the conveyor belt to the oven, where the paint is healed. The benefit to the electrostatic coating process is the ability to recover a bit of over-spray and have an automated process that will cut costs. The reason for a bit of over spray is paint particles that are not about the pieces will spin in the air and back to pieces. There are also some flaws in the process: everything in the layer area must be grounded to prevent static buildup and can easily bend, damage hanging devices and/or locations where the device depends on the conveyor. All hangers, conveyors, etc. Should often be cleaned to ensure good soil and prevent anyone in the area getting a severe shock. In the air system, any recess in the part being coated may be missed because the electrostatic paint is more attracted to the sharp corners and edges; this means that other processes to coat can be a better choice if the part has a niche. In the dyeing process, air traps can occur in blind holes and deep niches, so that the position of the part when entering the paint tank is essential in removing the trapped air which will limit the coverage of the paint.

Workpiece Geometry

The geometry of the workpiece is limited only by the size of the booth or paint tank. Using electrostatic coatings, it is possible to apply paint in a variety of thicknesses limited only by the tendency of paint to run and therefore damage the coating when applied in a way that is too thick. It is usually preferred to use many thin layers compared to one thick layer.

Settings and tools

Work can be delivered to coat booth or clothes hanger in any way, most often using hands or pliers. After passing the booth, or tank, and coated, the workpiece then goes into the cake oven or out into the open air to allow the paint to heal on the part. In spray coatings, many different spray nozzles may be used depending on the consistency of the desired paint and the shape of the workpiece.

Generally generated tools and geometries

There are various kinds of spray nozzles available for use in electrostatic coatings. The type of nozzle used will largely depend on the shape of the workpiece to be painted and the consistency of the paint.
