A gauge or gage , in science and engineering, is a tool used to perform measurements or to display specific dimensional information. A variety of tools exist that work like that, ranging from simple pieces of material that are measurable in size to complex pieces of machinery. Depending on usage, the measuring device may be described as a "tool for measuring the physical quantity", eg "to determine the thickness, space gap, material diameter, or flow pressure", or "a device that displays measurements of a system monitored by using a needle is a pointer moving along a calibrated scale ".

Basic type

All gauges can be divided into four main types, regardless of their actual usage.

  1. analog instrument meter with analog display ("needle"). Until the last few decades, the most common basic types.
  2. Digital instrument meter with analog view . The display shows "analog meter", commonly used in modern aircraft cockpit, and some hospital equipment etc.
  3. Digital instrument meter with digital display . Only numbers are displayed on a digital screen.
  4. Analog instrument meter with digital display . Only figures are displayed, but through mechanical or electro-mechanical displays (these days are very rare but have existed for hours, certain Doppler meters and information screens in all types of stations and airports)

The first two basic types are usually easier for the human eye and brain to interpret, especially if many meter instruments must be read simultaneously. The other two types only display digits, which are more complex for humans to read and interpret. The main example is cockpit instrumentation on the plane. The flight instrument can not display numbers only, so even in the most modern "glass-cockpit" where almost all instruments are displayed on the screen, some numbers are visible. Instead the screen displays analog meters.
