Site history
The Central of Georgia Railway began as Central Rail Road and Canal Company in 1833, and built passenger stations, delivery terminals and multiple stores in the Louisville Road area of ââSavannah around 1836. However, none of these structures still exist today. By the mid-1840s, the railway had expanded to 190 miles (310 km) of lines, and CG began building new stores in 1851. The first completed building was a carpenter's shop in 1853, followed by the original round house, machine shop, soft frame shop, blacksmith shop and several other buildings in 1855. The additional buildings were built in the complex into the 1920s.
Roundhouse, turntables and other structures were rebuilt in late 1920 after a major fire in 1923, as well as to accommodate locomotives and larger rolling stock.
Transition to the museum
The Southern Railway bought CG in 1963 and closed Savannah shops. Next, the train transferred the complex to the City of Savannah. The Coastal Heritage Society, a nonprofit organization, opened the museum on site in 1989.
