Working and style

Pot may be the pupil of Karel van Mander, like Hals, and they affect each other. Pot painting is sometimes an allegory in the subject and he also paints a photo of the portrait, like the Attorney of St Adrian Militia Company in 1630. He was also influenced by painter and sculptor Willem Buytewech.

Pot was commissioned in London to paint portraits of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria in 1632; the results now hang in the Royal Collection in London.

The scene type Pot genre is known as the "Merry Company" genre. This included a 1635 piece, Portrait of a Young Woman , and a companion piece, now missing, and its 1630 piece, A Merry's Company on the Desk . Both of these paintings contain several objects that are considered sensual symbolism. The Festive Company on the Desk was founded in a brothel, a popular theme in Dutch gamelan paintings.

The final section also contains a common theme discussed in Pot works; beauty, age and death. This theme culminates in its famous piece of Vanity Allegory, usually referred to simply as Pride , and which also contains motives and symbols of sensual love. Other famous Pot Works are the Introduction Introduction , Coin Collector and Wagon of Fools Flora (shown), where he mocks the tulips trade which is still young man in Haarlem, where for a while the flower was sold heavily.

His more standard works, though still stylish, include his works of Portrait of Sir Robert Phelips and his works from the King and Queen of England.
