Mauro Malang Santos (January 20, 1928 - June 10, 2017), commonly known as mononim Malang , is a Filipino cartoonist, illustrator and artist and award-winning artist. As a comic artist he is best known for the Kosme the Cop series, Chain Gang Charlie and Beelzebub.

Family
Malang is the son of Dan Santos and Juliana Malang. She married Mary San Pedro, with whom she has four children including painter Steve Santos and Soler Santos.

Education
Malang began to learn how to draw from Teodoro Buenaventura, a private teacher, when he was ten years old. He studied at the Antonio Regidor Elementary School in 1934, and attended Arellano High School in 1941. During one semester, Malang studied at the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines in 1946. He quit school at the age of 19 years. to work in the Manila Chronicle art department. While with the newspaper, he was apprenticed under cartoonist Liborio "Gat" Gatbonton. During 1972, Malang attended an art class at the Otis Institute of Art in Los Angeles, California, under a three-month scholarship
Careers
In Manila Chronicles, Malang created Kosme, Cop, Retired (1947-1965), the country's first English-language daily comic strip for the afternoon edition of the newspaper. In 1955, Malang founded Bughouse , a gallery specializing in cartoons. Malang established the gallery along with fellow cartoonists such as Liborio Gatbonton, Larry Alcala, Hugo Yonzon, and Elmer Abustan. In 1966, Malang launched Art for the Masses , a project that brings graphic art to more artists at affordable prices.
Awards
In 1957, founder of the Philippine Art Gallery, Lyd Arguilla, including Malang in the Twelve Artists of the Philippines-Who's Who. In 1958, Art Directors Guild of the Philippines awarded the Malang Award for Editorial Design. Malang won in a competition sponsored by the Philippine Society of Scientists and Cartoonists. In 1964, Filipino Society and Cartoonist named Malang as Artist of the Year. Malang won the award in an annual art competition organized by the Philippine Art Association, namely for Street Fight (Second Prize, 1951), Traffic (Third Prize, 1953), > The Golden Sky (Honorable Mention, 1959), Quarter Moon (Second Prize), and Gate to Intramuros (Honorable Mention, 1963). In 1963, Malang was among the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines. In 1981, Manila City awarded Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan ("Art and Culture Guide").
