RAL is a color matching system used in Europe created and managed by German RAL gGmbH (RAL non-profit LLC), which is a subsidiary of the German RAL Institute. In everyday conversations, RAL refers to the Classic RAL system, mainly used for varnish and powder coating but there is now a reference panel for plastics as well. The approved RAL product is provided with a hologram in early 2013 to make unauthorized versions difficult to produce. Imitation may show different colors and colors when observed under various light sources.

RAL Classic

In 1927, the German Reichs-AusschuÃÆ'Ÿ fÃÆ'¼r Lieferbedingungen und GÃÆ'¼tesicherung (Imperial Commission for Delivery and Quality Assurance) found a collection of forty colors under the name "RAL 840". Before that date producers and customers had to swap samples to illustrate the colors, whereas from then on they would rely on numbers.

In the 1930s, the numbers were changed uniformly into four digits and the collection was renamed "RAL 840 R" (R to be revised). With tints continuously added to the collection, it was revised again in 1961 and changed to "RAL 840-HR", which consists of 210 colors and is in use today. In the 1960s color was given an additional name to avoid confusion in the case of diverted digits.

Since "RAL 840-HR" only includes matte paint in the 1980s, we see the invention of "RAL 841-GL" for a shiny surface, limited to 193 colors. The main criteria for color in the RAL Classic collection is to be "the most important interest". Therefore, most of the colors in it are used on traffic alerts and traffic or dedicated to government agencies and public services (eg: RAL 1004 - Swiss Postal Service, RAL 1021 - Austrian Postal Service, RAL 1032 - German Postal Service). The first digit corresponds to the color shadow:

RAL F9

This collection, which follows the naming of the RAL Classic, was created in 1961. It currently consists of ten colors (RAL 1039-F9 Sand beige, RAL 1040-F9 Clay beige, RAL 6031-F9 Bronze green, RAL 6040-F9 -Light olive, RAL 8050-F9 Brown leather, RAL 8031-F9 Brown Sand, RAL 9021-F9 Black tar and RAL 6031-HR Bronze green for non-camouflage applications), used by Bundeswehr for military camouflage coating.

RAL Design

In 1993 a new color matching system was introduced, tailored to the needs of architects, designers and advertisers. It started with 1668 colors and was revised to 1625 colors. The RAL Classic and RAL Design colors do not intersect.

The RAL effect consists of 420 solid colors and, as a special highlight, seventy metallic colors. This is the first collection of RALs based on waterborne paint systems. There is no point made of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and chromate.

The newly developed and multifunctional double color fan RAL E 2 underlines the character of the RAL Effect. The RAL effects allow for the production of eco-efficient colors for all paint and lacquer manufacturers.

RAL Digital

Software for architects, interior decorators and everyone who deals with colors in creative ways. RAL Digital integrates RAL Classic, RAL Effect and RAL Design colors into graphics and CAD programs.

RAL Color Feeling

"Color of Feelings 09/10" is primarily designed as a professional planning tool for designers, architects, interior designers, interior decorators and painters. This is intended to be a source of inspiration on how to combine creative mainstream trends over the next two years. But also general consumers can be inspired by workbooks to develop their own ideas and to create their personal color designs.
