The yellow school bus is a color specially formulated for use on school buses in North America in 1939. Their colors are now officially known in Canada and the USA as Glossy Yellow National School Bus and was originally called National School Bus Chrome . The pigment used for this color, for a long time, contains yellow chrome.

The color is chosen because it attracts attention and is noticed quickly in peripheral vision, faster than any other color. The scientists describe this as follows: "The lateral edge vision for detecting amber is 1.24 times larger than the red color."

In April 1939, Dr. Frank W. Cyr, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York organized a conference establishing standards for the construction of national schools for the US, including yellow standard colors for school buses. It became officially known as the "National School Bus Chrome". The color was chosen because the black letters on the color were most easily seen in the early dark of the morning.

The conference met for seven days and the participants created a total of 44 standards, including specifications regarding body length, ceiling height and hall width. The paint experts from DuPont and Pittsburgh Paints participated. Conference Dr. Cyr, funded by a $ 5,000 grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, is also an important event to the extent that it includes transportation officers from each of the 48 states, as well as specialists from bus school manufacturing firms and paint companies. Colors were adopted by the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology) as Federal Standard No. 1. 595a, Color 13432.

The conference approach to school bus safety, as well as yellow, has persisted into the 21st century. Dr. Cyr is known as the "Yellow School Bus Father."

Use in other vehicle

The yellow color of other public vehicles, including taxis, does not come from the standardization of Dr. Cyr. Instead, it was from a much earlier selection made by Chicago entrepreneur John D. Hertz, who founded Yellow Cab Company in 1914, and used that color for his business brand. The Hertz car rental company will also use a bright yellow color as part of the logo, which is still in use today. It is not known whether or to what extent Hertz's choice influences Dr.'s conception. Cyr, or whether Hertz himself had the same concern about the visibility in his mind. Cyr.

The yellow color used in the Beijing "breadloaf" or "miandi" taxis shown in the photo below may be influenced by the yellow taxicab in the US.

School bus yellow outside North America

In Sweden, the yellow bus was operated as postbuses in a sparsely populated area by the Swedish Postal Service from 1923 to 1991, that is, since before the "yellow school bus" was created in 1939 (see picture in the gallery), with the color chosen because it is the traditional color of the Swedish Postal Service, and as such is the color used on the mailbox and vehicle. Other national postal services in Europe, including in Germany and Switzerland, also operate yellow buses for the same reason, since long before 1939, and some still do.

The yellow school bus is also the traditional color of long distance trainers and intercity buses used in Hungary.

The North American-style school bus (built by European manufacturers) is being introduced in parts of the United Kingdom, driven by corporate links to American industries, such as First Student UK, or the desire to re-brand school buses, such as the West Yorkshire Metro's > Mybus .

A similar yellow color was used in Santiago, Chile's bus line between 1992 and 2007.
