Sedrick Ervin Huckaby (1975) is an American artist known for using thick paint, an impasto to create a mural that evokes a traditional quilt and produces great portraits that represent his personal history through pictures of family members and neighbors. He was interviewed about his quilt-influenced abstract work in podcasts for the Painters Table . His work is on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Boston Fine Arts Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Chicago Institute of Art, and Nasher Art Museum at Duke University..

Work

His 2008 Big Momma House series includes 65 paintings, pastels and drawings made over a two-year period. The focus of this collection is maternal grandmother, Hallie Beatrice Carpenter, mother of the family and better known as "Big Momma". His work "A Love Supreme (Spring)", based on a jazz song of the same name by John Coltrane, and depicts a series of quilts draped across canvas that emphasize weight and texture. In this oil-sized mural, the folds of brightly colored fabrics imitate the rhythm and syncopation of the Coltrane jazz hit while paying homage to his traditional grandmother's African-American blanket. The 99% -Highand Hills series is a collection of portraits inspired by the Occupy Wall Street 2011 movement, showing the economic gap of the US population through a sketch of community members in addition to quotes from everyone.
