Initial years

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Miller received his first musical exposure from his mother, Bertha, whom he described as a jazz-influenced singer, and his father, George, known as "Sonny" who, in addition to his profession as a pathologist, was a jazz fan and a successful amateur recording engineer. The virtuoso guitar Les Paul and his music partner Mary Ford are regular visitors at Miller's home. Dr. and Mrs. Miller was the man and best companion at December 1949's marriage Les Paul and Mary Ford. Les Paul heard Steve, a four-year-old, on a wire recording made by Dr. Miller, when the boy "banged" the guitar given to him by his uncle, Dr. K. Dale Atterbury. Paul encourages Miller to continue his interest in the guitar... and "maybe he'll be something someday."

In 1950, the family moved to Texas. Sonny has many famous musicians who come home to record and Steve absorbs many of the many "greats" in his living room, such as T-Bone Walker, Charles Mingus, and Tal Farlow. T-Bone Walker taught Steve how to play his guitar behind his back and also with his teeth in 1952. Then in 1955, Steven began attending Dallas' St. Mark's School, a non-denominational prep school for boys where he formed the band , "The Marksmen". He taught his brother Buddy to play bass and also instructed his classmates, future music stars Boz Scaggs, some guitar chords so he could join the band. After leaving St. Mark's - "I was kicked out", he remembered with laughter in a 2004 interview - he then attended school in the Lakewood area of Dallas, Woodrow Wilson High School, from where he graduated in 1961. He was inducted into the Woodrow Hall of Fame in 2009 Another member is Dusty Hill of ZZ Top.

In 1962, Miller returned to Wisconsin, and entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he formed The Ardells. Also in Ardells is Brian Friedman, an H.S. local. piano player, and Jos Davidson, who is a bass player. Jos returned to Chicago with Steve when they left the University of W. in May 1962. Later, Jos joined Corky Siegel and Jim Schwal as their original bass player (1964-67). Scaggs joins Ardells next year, and Ben Sidran becomes the band keyboardist of the following year. After attending the University of Copenhagen in Denmark for a semester in his senior year to study comparative literature, he spent six credit hours to earn a literary degree, choosing to pursue a music career with his mother's encouragement and alert his father:

[Interviewer:] When you look back at your career range, what is the lasting moment, the sweetest high?

[Miller:] I have to say my dad's relationship with Les Paul and T-Bone Walker when I was young. Growing up in Dallas, being part of the phenomenal music scene. I found a way to do what I really wanted to do, which is very important for a child. Toward the end of the lecture, my parents said, 'Steve, what are you going to do?' I said, 'I want to go to Chicago and play the blues.' My dad looked at me like I was crazy. But my mother said, 'You have to do it now.' So I went to Chicago. And that is a special time. I played with Muddy Waters and Howlin 'Wolf. I work with adults and realize music is what I want to do, what I love.

Upon his return to the United States, Miller moved to Chicago where he immersed himself in the city of blues. During his time there, he worked with harmonica player Paul Butterfield and was filled with great blues Muddy Waters, Howlin 'Wolf and Buddy Guy, all offering young guitarist encouragement to pursue a music career. In 1965, Miller and keyboardist Barry Goldberg formed the Goldberg-Miller Blues Band and started playing at the Chicago club. They signed with Epic Records and released the single, "The Mother Song", and immediately started a residency at the New York City blues club.

When Miller returned from New York, he was disappointed with the Chicago blues scene, so he moved to Texas in hopes of completing his studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He was disappointed with academic politics at the University, so he took the Volkswagen Bus his father gave away and went to San Francisco. Upon arrival, he used the last $ 5 to see the Butterfield Blues Band and Jefferson Airplane at the Fillmore Auditorium. Miller fell in love with the vibrant San Francisco music scene and decided to stay.

Steve Miller Band

In 1966, he formed the Steve Miller Band (originally called The Steve Miller Blues Band ), with Miller also handling vocals. Billed as The Steve Miller Band, they supported Chuck Berry on the album Live at Fillmore Auditorium released that year. In 1968, they released the first album, Children of the Future , in a series of powerful rooted discs in the psychedelic blues style that later dominated the San Francisco scene. Write on Crawdaddy! , Peter Knobler calls the album "experience, knowledge, inspiration" threefold . Boz Scaggs rejoined Miller for this album and the next one, before starting his solo career.

The group is following the release of their second album, Sailor , with the album Brave New World , Your Saving Grace and Number 5 . These first five albums came up politely on the USS Billboard 200 chart but failed to produce big hit singles; the highest single is "Livin 'in USA" from Sailor . Songs from this period are also featured in the part of a double album compilation Anthology , which includes guest appearances on bass guitar, drums and backing vocals by Paul McCartney on "Celebration" and "My Dark Jam."

In this first period, Miller formed the personality of "Gangster of Love" (from Sailor ) and "Space Cowboy" (from Brave New World ), which was reused in later work. In 1972, Miller recorded the album Remember the Beginnings... The Journey of Eden , in which the third persona, "Maurice," was introduced in the rhythm of "Enter Maurice."

In 1973, The Joker marked the start of the second phase of Miller's career: this work was less oriented to the hard rock genre and simpler. The album received significant radio play, which helped the title track reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single also reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in September 1990 after it was used for television commercials.

Miller followed up with Fly Like an Eagle in 1976, and Book of Dreams in 1977. (Songs for both have been recorded at the same time, and released more than two albums rather than a single double album.) This pair represents the peak of Miller's commercial career, both reaching the top echelons of the album charts and spawning a series of hit single series, including "Fly Like an Eagle", "Rock 'n Me", "Take Money and Run "," Jet Airliner "and" Jungle Love ". The Steve Miller Band jointly led the main stadium tour with the Eagles in 1978.

Steve Miller Band's ongoing popularity has been well known. In 1978, Greatest Hits 1974-78 was released, featuring huge hits from two of his most popular albums, Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams > along with the title track from The Joker . This popularity also prompted successful concert tours throughout the 1980s and 1990s, often with a large number of young people present at the concert, many of whom were big hits fans and inevitably bought the biggest hits album. Miller often holds performances with other classic rock action, and plays a variety of music, including the selection of his blues from the late 1960s.

1980s and later

Miller developed a high level of music business acumen. Realizing that the song earned an individual publishing royalty no matter how long, it separated the 57 seconds electronic introduction of the song "Sacrifice" in Book of Dreams, named it "Electro Lux Imbroglio" and published it separately, generating thousands of extra dollars as a result. On the heels of this great success, Miller took a long hiatus of recordings and touring, appearing in 1981 with Circle of Love . The sales were disappointing, however, and in 1982 he returned to the pop formula with another hit album, Abracadabra . This is Miller's last major commercial success; a series of collections, live albums, and attempts to discover new styles emerged in 1984 ( Italian X-Rays ), 1986 ( Life in the 20th Century ) and 1988 (< i> Born 2B Blue ). He released Wide River in 1993, which was the only new material studio release between 1988 and 2010.

Miller released Bingo! on June 15, 2010. The blues album includes, issued through the Space Cowboy label itself in partnership with Roadrunner/Loud & amp; Proud Records, is the first studio album released since 1993. Let Your Hair Drop , release the companion to Bingo! , released 10 months later (on April 18, 2011).

For the 2010-11 school year, Miller is an Artist in Residence at USC Thornton School of Music, where he teaches students in Popular Music and Music Industry programs.

At a guitar auction in 2011, Miller stated that he has 450 such instruments.

In 2016, Miller was sworn in to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony caused controversy, because Miller's disparaging remarks about the experience were "unpleasant" and that the Hall of Fame was misogynistic and "need to respect the artists they say they respect, which they do not do." Miller himself said part of his angry behavior that night because Hall vetoed his proposal to be inaugurated by Elton John, because he "knows me and probably knows my music better than most people", and controls aspects such as license contracts. The Black Keys, who were asked to induct Miller and accepted as old fans, later stated that they regretted the experience. And Auerbach says that for him and Patrick Carney, the unpleasant experience is around Miller, because he does not know who his band is and does not care. Auerbach and Carney leave the ceremony as they finish their speech, instead of staying for the whole event.
