Picasso painted the Actor during the winter of 1904-1905 when he was 23 years old. This painting is the work of the Artist Period Rose when he changed his painting style from the gloomy tones of the Blue Period to a warmer and more romantic color. Picasso painted the Actor on the other side of a landscape painting by another artist because he could not afford a new canvas at the time. From 1912 to June 1938 the painting was owned by Alice and Paul Friedrich Leffmann, originally from Cologne. The painting is currently located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was donated to the museum in 1952 by the heir of Thelma Chrysler Foy's car, the daughter of Walter Chrysler, founder of the Chrysler car company. Experts estimate that the painting, which is one of the largest of the Picasso Rose Periods, is worth more than US $ 100 million.
