Histori

1978-1999

Home Depot was co-founded by Bernard Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ron Brill and Pat Farrah in 1978. The Home Depot proposal is to build a home improvement superstor, bigger than their competitor's facility. Investment banker Ken Langone helps Marcus and Blank to secure the necessary capital.

In 1979, the first two stores, built in rented spaces of JC Penney, were originally a "Treasure Island" convenience store, opened on the Atlanta metro (at Doraville and on Memorial Drive in Decatur, both near I-285). ) on June 21st. On September 22, 1981, Home Depot was published on NASDAQ and collected $ 4,093 million. Home Depot joined the New York Stock Exchange on April 19, 1984.

The Home Depot started a branch from Georgia to Florida in 1981 by opening stores in Hollywood and Ft. Lauderdale. In 1984, Home Depot operated 19 stores with sales of more than $ 256 million. To enter the Dallas market, Home Depot acquired Bowater Home Center from Bowater Inc. on October 31, 1984 for $ 40 million. The increased expansion of The Home Depot in the mid-1980s created financial hardship with revenue falling at 42% and debt rising to $ 200 million. The Home Depot's financial difficulties also caused the stock price to fall. To curb the difficulties of Home Depot it only opened 10 stores in 1986 by offering shares of 2.99 million shares at $ 17 per share which helped The Home Depot to restructure its debt.

In 1989, Home Depot became the largest home improvement store in the United States that surpassed Lowe. In the 1990s The Home Depot sought ways to redefine its market. Installation programs for home improvement items such as windows or carpets were launched in 1991 called EXPO successfully. A 480-page book of Home Repairs 1-2-3 was published in 1995. Aikenhead's Hardware hardware chain Aikenhead's Hardware was acquired by The Home Depot in 1994 for $ 150 million with a 75% stake. All Aikenhead Hardware stores were later converted into The Home Depot stores. In 1995, sales reached $ 10 billion while operating 350 stores.

Former General Electric executive Robert Nardelli became CEO and President of The Home Depot in 2000.

2000-2007

San Diego maintenance and repair company supplies Warehouse Maintenance purchased by The Home Depot in 1997 for $ 245 million. Maintenance Warehouse is purchased as it is a leading direct-mail marketer for maintenance, repairs and operational supplies that can reach customers out of reach by The Home Depot. The Atlanta Apex Supply-based company was acquired by The Home Depot in 1999. Apex Supply is a wholesale distributor of pipes, HVACs, industrial pipelines and fittings. Apex Warehouse Supplies and Maintenance changed its name in 2004 as The Home Depot Supply .

In 2004, Home Depot employees at a suburban Detroit shop in Harper Woods, Michigan, refused an offer to be represented by the union, with a vote of 115 to 42 from joining the Food and Commercial Workers Union. If the union has won, the Michigan store will be the first Home Depot to have union representation.

Your More Warehouse , a large pipeline distributor focusing on custom order fulfillment, was acquired by The Home Depot in 2001. Other Warehouse You also provide two divisions of The Home Depot and EXPO Design Center. The EXPO Design Center division was reorganized in 2001 with three divisions based in the Northeast in South Plainfield, New Jersey, West in Orange, California, and Southeast in Atlanta, Georgia.

Home Depot entered the Mexican market in 2002 by acquiring the Del Norte home improvement chain. In addition, The Home Depot has started building stores in Mexicali and Tijuana. In the same year, Home Depot Landscape Supply was launched to integrate professional landscapers and upscale plants into the nursery retail chain. Home Depot Landscape Supply only lasted for five years with only a few stores each on Atlanta metro and Dallas/Fort Worth. Home Depot decided to close all Home Depot Landscape Supply stores by the end of 2007.

In September 2005, Home Depot Direct launched its online home furnishings store, 10 Crescent Lane , soon followed by the launch of Paces Trading Company , its online lighting store. In mid 2006, Home Depot acquired the Home Decorators Collection , which was placed as an additional brand under the Home Depot Direct division.

In 2006, Home Depot acquired Hughes Supply the largest home retailer in the United States for $ 3.2 billion. Hughes Supply is integrated into The Home Depot Supply to better serve business-to-business customers. The Home Depot Supply changed its brand name to HD Supply in January 2007. Five months later The Home Depot sold HD Supply to a consortium of three private equity firms, The Carlyle Group, Bain Capital and Clayton, Dubilier and Rice (with each agreeing to buy one third share in the division).

2007-present

On January 2, 2007, Home Depot and Robert Nardelli jointly approved Nardelli's resignation as CEO after a six-year term. Nardelli resigned amid complaints over his heavy management and whether his $ 123.7 million payment package (excluding stock options) over the past five years had been excessive, given his poor performance compared to his low-ranking rivals. The severance package of $ 210 million was criticized because when stocks fell, the pay rose.

His replacement, Frank Blake, previously served as vice chairman of the company of the executive board and vice president. Blake approves a much more conservative compensation package than Nardelli, which relies heavily on corporate success. Despite an old Nardelli representative at GE and Home Depot, Blake is said to have no Nardelli's hard side and would rather make decisions based on consensus. Indeed, Blake rejected many of his predecessor's strategies, and it has been reported that the two men have not spoken since Nardelli left Home Depot.

In 2008 and 2009, with a decline in the housing market, The Home Depot announced layoffs of several thousand employees, as well as the closure of 54 national stores, including the entire EXPO Design Center chain. Partners at EXPO are allowed to re-apply for Home Depot jobs after layoffs, and do not lose any positions if re-employed. In February 2009, sales totaled $ 71,288 billion, more than $ 20 billion down from a two-year peak due to HD Supply sales and a decrease in revenues in the maintained business. In 2012, they continue to close their large box-style stores in China, but small shops specializing in specialty products and focusing on more intimate interaction between customers and colleagues remain open there.

In 2013, The Home Depot set up two major distribution centers in Atlanta and Los Angeles.

In August 2014, it was announced that Frank Blake would resign as CEO and would be replaced by 57-year-old Craig Menear. The change took place on November 1, 2014. Blake will continue with the company as chairman. Menear joined The Home Depot in 1997, and served in various management positions and vice presidents, until 2003, including vice president of hardware merchandising, vice president of Southwest Division Merchandising, and division goods manager of the Southwest Division. He then served as senior vice president of merchandising from August 2003 to April 2007. He later served as executive vice president of merchandising from April 2007 to February 2014. Until becoming CEO, Menear served as US Retail president from February 2014 to November 1, 2014.

The company encountered data breaches in September 2014. One of the main reasons for data breaches is the practice of entering credit card numbers directly to computers at service desks and pro-desks, and in specialized departments including floors, kitchen cabinets, appliances, and millworks, rather than using terminals direct POS credit card. The practice was discontinued, and Home Depot offered one year of free credit monitoring through AllClearID for every customer who requested it. There are also reports of credit card numbers stolen when used to make purchases at Homedepot.com.

On July 22, 2015, Home Depot acquired Interline Brands from P2 Capital Partners, private equity arm Goldman Sachs, and management of Interline Brands for $ 1.6 billion. Interline Brands became fully integrated with The Home Depot in August 2016 with the Interline Brands website joining the Home Depot website. The subsidiary of Interline Brands is now the company of The Home Depot.

Four additional prototype stores were built in the year at Acworth, Georgia; Smyrna, Tennessee; Greensboro, Georgia; and then Winchester, Tennessee in that order. Centers are expected to earn $ 5- $ 7 million annually, although actual numbers are reported to be much higher. The fuel center sells beer, hot food, and snacks along with providing diesel and gas on a separate island. This allows contractors with large trucks to be able to fill their vehicles. The fuel center offers car washes, large enough to accommodate full-size pickup trucks and other large commercial vehicles.

Environmental recordings

Home Depot has stated on their website that they are committed to "we continue to lead by example to the world that sustainability business practices are not only possible, they are good for business". The Home Depot introduced labels on nearly 3,000 products in 2007. Label promotes energy conservation, sustainable forestry and clean water. Home Depot executives say that as the world's largest buyer of building materials, their company has the power to persuade thousands of suppliers, home contractors and consumers to follow in the footsteps of environmental sustainability. "Who in the world has an opportunity to have a greater impact on this sector than Home Depot?" asked Ron Jarvis, vice president for environmental innovation at Home Depot. The program follows Home Depot's promise in the late 1990s to eliminate timber sales from endangered forests in countries including Chile and Indonesia. Home Depot has since worked with environmental groups to create a variety of green programs. For example, Home Depot planted thousands of trees at its headquarters in Atlanta to offset carbon emissions. In 2007, The Home Depot Foundation (the corporate charity) committed to investing $ 100 million over the next decade to build more than 100,000 eco-friendly homes and plant 3,000,000 trees.

In addition, Home Depot is promoting a compact fluorescent light bulb in its store. As part of this effort, the company created the largest recycling program in the United States for bulb. In March 2013, the Home Depot location in Canada stopped receiving compact fluorescent light bulbs for recycling.

Major sponsors

Television

In 2002, The Home Depot joined PBS as a sponsor of This Old House and Ask This Old House .

In 2003, The Home Depot became a sponsor for Trading Spaces .

Sports

Company co-founder Arthur Blank also purchased the Atlanta Falcons franchise from the National Football League in February 2002, although The Home Depot did not make contact with the team until April 2017, when The Home Depot gained the naming rights to a 13-acre park built adjacent to the new stadium Falcons, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Home Depot Backyard is planned to be built on a site previously occupied by Georgia Dome.

Since 1991, the company has been a major athletic supporter, sponsoring the US and Canadian Olympic teams, and launching programs that offer jobs to athletes who accommodate their training and competition schedules. Home Depot ceased sponsoring the Canadian Olympic Team in 2005 and ended its sponsorship program for the US Olympic team in 2009.

Home Depot has been a major sponsor for Joe Gibbs Racing at NASCAR since 1999. Their arrival into the series coincides with Tony Stewart leaving Indy Racing League to join what is now the Sprint Cup Series. Stewart drove the # 20 sponsored Home Depot car to Joe Gibbs Racing until 2008, winning 2 of his 3 championship series in the car, and was replaced by Joey Logano, who took the car to the winning lane twice. After Matt Kenseth joined the team, Home Depot's status as the # 20 primary sponsor was taken over by Dollar General, but the company still became the most frequent secondary sponsor through the Husky Tools division. On June 23, 2014, the company announced it would terminate NASCAR sponsorship after 2014.

Home Depot is the main sponsor of The Home Depot Center in Carson, California, home to Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA from Major League Soccer, and Los Angeles Riptide (Major League Lacrosse), and many other major sporting events. The place is now called StubHub Center.

The smart house is a live-alive laboratory for ten high-tech students who allow them to immerse themselves in work. The goal of this project is to help provide innovative solutions for homes in areas such as home security and monitoring, communications, energy efficiency, entertainment, environment and health.

In January 2007, The Home Depot became the official home improvement sponsor of ESPN College Gameday.

Outside the US

Canada

Home Depot Canada is a Canadian Home Depot unit and one of Canada's home improvement retailers. Operation Canada consists of 182 stores and employs over 28,000 people in Canada. Home Depot Canada has stores in all ten Canadian provinces and serves the territorial Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon through electronic means (Online Sales). The headquarters of Canada is located in Toronto.

The Canadian Unit is made with the purchase of Aikenhead Hardware. Home Depot Management has an ambitious plan to take over its biggest competitor, RONA, which has about four times as many stores. However, some RONA stores are smaller than Home Depot stores in general. In the case of large box stores, Home Depot has more stores than RONA, (not including other Rona banners like RÃÆ'Â © no DÃÆ' Â © pÃÆ'Â't or Cashway). In 2007, RONA preceded The Home Depot in total retail sales, due to RONA's aggressive consolidation effort, combined with the loss of Home Depot's supply division, HD Supply, in July 2007. Home Depot is now facing competition from Lowe as they have moved to the Canadian market effective at the end of 2007; Lowe now has 35 outlets in Canada.

In Quebec, where it has 22 stores, The Home Depot is only branded "Home Depot" (using English words but without a definite article "the").

Mexico

Home Depot operates 106 stores in Mexico and has been one of the largest retailers in Mexico since entering the market in 2001. Home Depot increased its presence in Mexico in 2004, with the acquisition of Home Mart, Mexico's second-largest home improvement retailer.

Home Depot Mexico employs over 11,000 employees across the country and has an annual growth rate of 10 percent.

China

In December 2006, Home Depot announced the acquisition of China Home Improvement Retailer The Home Way. This acquisition gives Home Depot a direct presence in China, with 12 stores in six cities.

In April 2011, Home Depot closed its last store in Beijing, the fifth Home Depot to close in China in the previous two years. In September 2012, The Home Depot announced the closure of all major box stores in China. The Home Depot maintains two specialty stores in China, a Home Decorators Collection Store and a paint and floor shop.

On September 16, 2012, all seven box stores in China have been closed. Home Depot has no immediate plans to expand further specialty stores in China. The company takes a "wait and see" attitude towards the Chinese market, but does not want to attract entirely because re-entry to the market will be very expensive.

The lack of success of Home Depot in China has been linked to the disconnection between the Do-it-yourself ethos of The Home Depot and Chinese culture. In 2012, Home Depot acknowledges that it misreads the country's tastes for self-made products. As a company spokesman said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, "Market trends say this is more of a do-it-for-me culture". Culturally, manual labor is seen as an activity for lower-class citizens, and some speculate that The Home Depot can take advantage of this by offering a "do-it-for-me" model to Chinese consumers. Chinese consumers prefer to see finished products, such as renovated rooms, rather than light bulbs and wood. The same problem does not exist outside of China, especially in Canada, where Chinese Home Depot ads and store nameplate can be found in areas with large Chinese demographics.

United Kingdom

There are reports that Home Depot is interested in acquiring B & Q, the largest DIY retailer in the UK, Ireland and China. Speculative speculation began in 1999 when Asda retailers were bought by Walmart. Home Depot must get Kingfisher plc, parent company B & amp; Q, to obtain B & amp; Q. Kingfisher consists of several European DIY chains; However, Home Depot is only interested in B & amp; Q and said that it will cast Castorama chains that operate in France, Italy, Poland and Russia. The talks ended in 2005 did not result in a takeover deal.

South America

In 1997, Home Depot entered the Chilean and Argentinean markets. While the effort was viewed with great optimism by founders Bernard Marcus and Arthur Blank, it finally proved unprofitable. In October 2001, Chilean partner Falabella bought Home Depot shares from five Chilean Home Center stores and recruited their Home Store. In 2003, after joining Sodimac, all shops adopted the brand. The company has grown throughout Latin America very profitable and successful. This is currently the Home Improvement N Â ° 1 company in South America. In 2002, Argentina's Home Depot was purchased by the Chilean company Cencosud and renamed the Easy shop, a company that has also expanded across South America. Currently it is a Home Improvement company N Â ° 2 in South America.

Controversy

Whistleblower Case

The Home Depot is involved in whistleblower litigation filed under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) law. In July 2005, a former employee of Michael Davis, represented by lawyer Mark D. Schwartz, filed a whistleblower suit against Home Depot, claiming his dismissal was retaliation for refusing to make unwarranted backcharges against the vendor. Davis alleges that Home Depot is forcing its employees to meet the set quota of surcharges to cover damaged or defective goods, forcing employees to make a chargeback to vendors for non-damaged and undamaged merchandise. Home Depot alleges that it sacked Davis for repeatedly failing to show up for work.

The trial was originally concluded in June 2006, but in April 2007, US Department of Labor Judge Pamela Lakes Wood ordered the case reopened after Home Depot law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld revealed that the retail giant's in-house advisor told them that two Home Depot employees who testified at the trial had lied. Akin Gump sent Wood a letter on September 29, 2006, in which the law firm requested that the testimony be violated. In response to Akin Gump's disclosure, Davis attorney Mark D. Schwartz requested that the case be reopened to allow further questions from witnesses. On April 6, 2007, Wood ordered that the case be reopened.

Schwartz was quoted by the New York Post as saying, "I have reason to believe that these witnesses are intimidated to give false testimony." Home Depot called Schwartz's allegations "helpless".

Home Depot has resolved the dispute in the settlement date of 28 March 2008. In the settlement, Home Depot changed some of its corporate governance requirements. Home Depot also agreed to pay the plaintiff advisors for $ 6 million in cash and $ 8.5 million in common stock.

Patent law controversy

Powell v. Home Depot USA, Inc. (2008cv61862) (2011) is a decision by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida concerning patent infringement on a "safe handed" device that Michael Powell, an independent contractor for Home Depot, was made in response to injuries on the hands of colleagues using radial saws inside store. The district court jury returned Powell's favorable verdict.

In 2011, Home Depot appealed the decision to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, challenging the district court's rejection of its renewed motion for the verdict as a legal matter on the subject of offenses, desires, and damages. They also challenge the construction of district court claims, unfair actions, and attorney's fees. The appeals court did not find unfair behavior and errors that were not severe enough on the part of Powell's lawyer.

Design of tilt-up construction from store

Behind the Joplin 2011 tornado where the Home Depot wall collapsed after being hit by an EF5 tornado, The Kansas City Star, quoting engineers, criticized Home Depot's practice of using tilt-up construction in hundreds of large box stores the nearest big-box stores in Joplin, including Walmart and the Sports Academy, which have concrete block construction, lose their roof but the walls remain intact). In a tilt-up construction, the concrete is poured in place, lifted into place, and then affixed to the roof. Engineers told the Star that training, though usually safe and efficient, was dangerous in a big storm because as soon as the roof was lifted (as happened in Joplin) the wall collapsed in a domino effect. Seven people were killed in front of the store when the 100,000-pound wall collapsed on them, while the 28 people behind the shop survived when the walls collapsed outside. Only two of the plank walls at Home Depot survive. Instead, 3 people died at Walmart but 200 survived. The engineer notes that when the construction of the concrete block fails, the element of the structure breaks in pieces and is usually not in large sheets. Home Depot says it fundamentally disagrees with engineers quoted by Star and says it will use tilt-up construction when rebuilding Joplin stores.

Payment of Home Depot payment system

On September 2, 2014, security reporter Brian Krebs reported that he saw evidence of credit card numbers related to Home Depot purchases sold online, which he concluded to suggest that Home Depot's payment system was breached by hackers. On September 8, 2014, Home Depot confirmed that their payment system was compromised. According to their press release, this violation affects every customer who makes a purchase at every Home Depot store from April 2014 through September 2014. Home Depot offers customers affected by the one-year free credit monitoring service from AllClear ID. Also in their press release, they make sure to emphasize that there is no evidence to suggest that online customers are affected by the breach. On September 18, 2014, Home Depot released a statement saying that hackers earned a total of 56 million credit card numbers as a result of the breach. Since the infringement, Home Depot has launched a new encryption technology for cash registering systems and an independent checkout system to protect customers. A class action lawsuit filed against the company.

In March 2016 Home Depot agreed to pay at least $ 19.5 million to compensate more than 50 million affected consumers. Settlement terms include $ 13 million to replace buyers and $ 6.5 million in funds for cardholder identity protection services.

Discrimination against disability discrimination EEOC

In September 2012, Home Depot agreed to pay $ 100,000 and provide other assistance to resolve the disability disability lawsuit filed by the US Cooperation Opportunities Commission, for alleged failure to provide reasonable accommodation for a cashier with cancer in Towson, Maryland, stores and then because it was said to fire him because of his condition.
