Curatorial Analysis

In this work, Quick-to-See Smith sought to reject stereotypes about North American indigenous peoples, using the work of Caitlin. The use of brand logos is believed to confirm "that indigenous people can be simultaneously traditional and contemporary," according to the curator at the Hood Museum of Art. "Hecho en USA" is intended to reflect "the intermingling of language, culture, and the American subculture." In addition, the words "fries" and sign language are meant to illustrate how indigenous people often have to incorporate new ideas and words into the lexicon and their lives as they seek to stay in touch with modern life.
