The special paint scheme is a one time variation or limited to the typical appearance of a race car. Its use has historically been largely confined to NASCAR stock car racing, in part because of the larger surface area of ââstock cars, and the longer season, but has entered IndyCar in limited mode. Increased NASCAR media coverage has contributed to their popularity with fans and sponsors.
However, some sponsors and die-cast makers have been promoting promotions to other motorsport codes, as Red Bull Racing has a Star Wars paint scheme to promote the same Revenge of the Sith in Formula One and Superman. to promote Superman Returns . Panther Racing in the Indy Race League runs Pennzoil Platinum paint schemes at selected IRL 2005 events instead of the normal yellow design.

History
1991 Daytona 500: Winston Saves Troop
The special paint scheme at NASCAR dates back to the 1991 Daytona 500. As part of the promotion of R. J. Reynolds, five unsupported riders have a paint scheme in their car that honors the US Armed Forces branch serving in Operation Desert Storm:
- No. 7: Alan Kulwicki - Army
- No. 18: Greg Sacks - Navy
- No. 24: Mickey Gibbs - Air Force
- No. 71: Dave Marcis - Coast Guard
- No. 88: Buddy Baker - Marines
The alternative paint scheme really became famous in 1995, when Dale Earnhardt appeared in The Winston with a silver car (as a tribute to Winston's silver anniversary) rather than its traditional black car. The car is nicknamed "Silverwrench" or "Pick Silver" . A year later, Earnhardt continued the trend in 1996 to run The Winston with a 1996 Atlanta Olympic themed car.
The fans' reaction to the paint scheme proved so popular that by the end of the decade almost no race had gone without one or more drivers wearing a special paint scheme. Often special one-week sponsor transactions are involved in the scheme, and other times the existing sponsor chooses to promote alternative products within the company. Examples of one-week deals include promoting the first films to coincide with certain race weekends, and promoting other simultaneous events (such as the Olympics).
Often some drivers use the associated paint scheme simultaneously.

Popular themes
Special paint schemes often feature special events, and often include the following:
- Partner sponsors are the main sponsor of the selected race.
- Often, if an associate sponsor sponsors a race, they will get a major sponsor for the race.
- Sports teams (especially during special promotions)
- During 2001 MB of Cal Ripken Jr. 400, sponsored No. 18 MBNA driven by Bobby Labonte drove a specially-themed Pontiac Grand Prix Ripken. Ripken is a grand marshal, starting the race, and the race winner is to attend the game.
- In 2007 Lenox Industrial Tools 300, Carl Edwards used the Boston Red Sox-based car to celebrate Jack Roush in partnership with Fenway Sports Group, headquartered in New England. The following year, David Ragan has a Bosox-based car.
- InBev, Ford's No. 2 sponsor. 9 by George Gillett driven by Kasey Kahne, fielded a white car with mountain motifs that featured the Olympic rings as part of the Belgian beer sponsorship of the US Olympic team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The paint scheme is only used for races held during the Olympics.

- 3 Doors Down has also been featured on some previous NASCAR cars with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2008 for the NASCAR Sprint All Star Race and Tony Stewart at the Nationwide Series in 2003 for the race at Michigan International Speedway.
Movie themes
The use of movie-themed cars is best suited for promotion through the use of special paint schemes due to the short-term nature of the box office run film.
Often, a sponsor is involved in a movie, and to promote the movie, they will deal with film producers to have their car painted to reflect the film. At other times, a movie studio will work with the driver to have a movie theme.

Throwback Themes
After Ernie Irvan put the "Battlestar" throwback on the pole at DieHard 500 in 1997, fans' reaction forced Robert Yates Racing to consider having a "Battlestar" design in Talladega for the rest of the team relationship with Texaco. When Chevron (who had bought Texaco) switched to Chip Ganassi Racing, fans reacted for sponsors to return to the 1994-2000 Yates era design after Chevron changed the paint scheme in 2001.
Liz Allison (Davey's widow) told the media in announcing the old fans Battlestar 2003 will cheer when they see the classic design back for the race, and warns Ganassi driver Jamie McMurray that if he wins the race at Battlestar, "You better bar the door because Allisons take over We are really excited and very touched (by Chevron's generosity in remembering the legend). "
Military paint scheme
New variations on military paint schemes have also been used for years. The US Army began sponsoring No. car. 01 belongs to MB2 Motorsports on a full-time basis in 2003. For the big warnings, the cars use a special camouflage design. The soldiers then went to Dale Earnhardt, Inc. for two seasons before joining Stewart Haas Racing in 2009 and being the main sponsor of Ryan Newman No. 1. 39 to 2012.
Although the scheme was not military-based, some cars used patriotic paint schemes for 2001 MB of Cal Ripken Jr. 400 in Dover, the first race after the September 11 attacks.
Often a die-cast replica of a toy car paint scheme is produced for the collector market.
Difference between special and alternating paint schemes
With the sports economy dictating higher fees, some sponsors have decided to share sponsorship spaces with other sponsors, leading to two alternate "usual" designs, such as Richard Childress Racing, where the three teams have some alternative major sponsors. In 2009, the team No. 29 has Shell and Hershey, while No. 31 has Caterpillar, AstraZeneca, and Lenox Industrial Tools, and # 07 owns Jack Daniel's, DirecTV, and BB & T as their three sponsors. Other sponsors have decided to promote products different from their sponsored dollars, such as Mars (M & M's, Snickers, Skittles, Wrigley's, Pedigree, Banfield Pet Hospital), Lowe (two schemes, one configurable standard for promoting services professional or regular logos, and one Kobalt Tools), and Kellogg's with standard snacks Kellogg and Cheez-It (Kellogg's products), and FedEx, which uses five different schemes with different colors to promote four different brands - Express, Ground, and Kinko. (The fifth scheme was used in 2005 in Darlington, and was a special scheme, to promote the St. Jude Hospital they supported in Memphis.) It was not a "special" scheme, but a companion scheme to promote products through sponsoring who might be willing using broadcasts to promote their wide range of products.
The number of special paint schemes has led to criticism that they are no longer "special" at all. However, it should be differentiated between alternate sponsors, different products on the car (especially promotions for specialty products), and the correct paint-specific scheme, which promotes special events.
IndyCar Series
Although not as extensive as NASCAR, cars in the IndyCar Series have also participated in special paint schemes. Most of which have been used have featured a "retro" paint scheme or tribute, which depicts the famous cars of the past. In most cases, sponsors are not the same but bring current sponsor decals on the classic mascot.
- 1987-1991: Vince Granatelli and the recent UNO/Granatelli entry using the "regress" paint scheme featuring orange day colors, similar to STP Turbine cars in the late 60s, and other Andy Granatelli entries at the beginning of the year 1970s.

- 2011: HÃÆ'à © lio Castroneves AAA-sponsored cars are similar to the classic "Gould Charge" paint scheme that Rick Mears worked on in the early 1980s. It's also similar to Paul Tracy's 1992 Car 1 engine.
- 2014, 2016 and 2018 Indy 500: HÃÆ' à © lio Castroneves Pennzoil-sponsored car has a special paint scheme, dubbed "Yellow Submarine" after Rick Mears's car. Helio piloted the car in 2014 to seconds, losing 0.06 seconds to Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Artists such as David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol have contributed to this project.
