Route description
SR 18 starts at the intersection with SR 311 (Paint Bank Road) in the Paint Bank community in Craig County. The state highway leads northeast as Potts Creek Road through the Potts Creek valley, which was once known as Carpenter Creek. The Potts River Valley is bordered by Mount Potts to the east and Mount Peters to the west; the last mountain is part of the Virginia - West Virginia line. SR 18 enters Alleghany County and passes through the hamlets of Potts Creek, Jordan Mines, and Boiling Spring. At the last intersection of the state highway of Potts Creek just south of its encounter with the Jackson River, the highway enters the city of Covington and becomes the Indian Valley Road. At its intersection with Pitzer Ridge Road on the former Fort Carpenter site, the SR 18 becomes Carpenter Drive and crosses the Jackson River. The state highway crosses Alleghany of the CSX Subdivision. SR 18 parallel to the railroads north just below Interstate 64 to the northern terminal on Madison Street, which carries US 60 and US 220, south of downtown Covington.
