Amy Pleasant (born 1972) is an American painter who lives and works in Birmingham, AL with representatives by Jeff Bailey Gallery (New York, NY) and Whitespace Gallery (Atlanta, GA). He received the BFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago and the MFA from Tyler Art School at Temple University.
Pleasant is famous for its figurative, free paintings and associative images that explore simple everyday actions in slowly exposed narratives. In an article from Art in America, Max Henry writes that his work "tells of everyday life... full of existential anxiety and loneliness, his paintings can evoke an empathetic response from the audience." David Moos wrote the work of Pleasant that through "overlapping narrative fragments" viewers are allowed to "catch a glimpse of image formation" and "be made aware of how painters make decisions in painting, transforming parts and visible editing composite images." Martha Schwendener, art critic for the New York Times and a photography critic at the Yale School of Art, reviewing Pleasant's work in contemporary art art, argues that Pleasant's paintings are "laid out in a grid that simultaneously hints at the angry narrative" which is classically reminiscent of "Early paintings of Sue Williams - the fanatical feminists - or comics whose narratives have been destroyed, leave only shame, fear, or incitement that instigates them from the beginning."
In addition to Jeff Bailey Gallery, Pleasant has held solo exhibitions at the Birmingham Art Museum, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (Atlanta, GA), Tandem Gallery (Birmingham, AL), Rhodes College, Ruby Green Contemporary Art Center (Nashville, TN), and University of Alabama , Birmingham.
Pleasant has participated in group exhibitions at venues such as the Knoxville Museum of Art (Knoxville, TN), Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, NC), Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, GA), Wiregrass Museum of Art (Dothan, AL) National Museum of Women in Art (Washington, DC), Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (Winston-Salem, NC), Art Museum of the University of Memphis (Memphis, TN), Mobile Arts Museum (Mobile, AL), Embassy of the United States in Prague, Czech Republic, and Huntsville Museum of Art (Huntsville, AL).
Individual Artist Grant Recipients from the Greater Birmingham Culture Alliance and the prestigious Alabama Arts Council and Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018, his work can be found in the Birmingham Museum of Art collections, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, the Wiregrass Art Museum, Progressive Companies and Consulates US General in Dubai, as well as in many private collections.
Pleasant was commissioned by the American Ambient/post-rock Hammock band to create album art for the 2013 release, Oblivion Hymns. In December 2015, Pleasant was announced as one of only 25 recipients of Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & amp; Sculptors Grant, which recognizes painters and sculptors create works of exceptional quality through unlimited career support.
