Format
Each 30 minute show usually begins with Ross (or guest) standing in front of a blank canvas with a white or black background. Guests included Ross's old friend, Dana Jester, along with Ross's son Steve, his old instructor John Thamm, and many others. In the 30 minute program, Ross paints an imaginary sight, using a technique of wet-on-wet oil painting, where painters continue to add paint over the still wet paint rather than waiting for each layer of dry paint. Combining this method with the use of two-inch brushes and other types, as well as a painting knife, allows it to paint trees, water, clouds and mountains in seconds.
Each painting will start with a simple stroke that does not seem to be more than a colored stain. As he adds more strokes, the taints turn into complex landscapes. When he painted, he instructed viewers about the technique he was using, he added a commentary describing the "happy little cloud" and the "happy little tree" he created. He will also mention pieces of his own life, including his military career and time spent in Alaska, family anecdotes, and his affection for small animals, raised and liberated. The show sometimes features Ross videos with baby squirrels, deer, raccoons, or other small animals. Each program is taken in real time with two cameras: Ross shot and canvas, and close-ups of canvas or pallets.
Ross made three versions of each painting for each episode of the show. The first, painted before recording, sits on the horses, outside the camera, and is used by Ross as a template to make a second copy - which is actually seen by the viewers is paint. After recording the episode, Ross painted a more detailed third version for inclusion in his instruction book. These three versions are then donated to various PBS stations.
