Careers

In 1928, Custer's bond with the life of an artist working strengthened through his marriage to the British-born commercial artist Arthur Ernest "Jimmy" Sharp (May 20, 1886 - December 10, 1967). Sharp and Custer meet while attending an artist's retreat in the sand dunes of Saugatuck, Michigan. The couple spent a year abroad, studying art in London and Paris before returning to settle in New York City in 1930.

Custer shares his time teaching at the Pratt Institute, creating his own artwork, and producing commercial and editorial art for magazines such as The New Yorker, Pageant, Seventeen, New Republic, Fiction Parade, and Geographic Survey. He also enjoys a steady job as a picture reporter for the New York Herald-Tribune, which covers the orchestra events in the city.

In addition to his commercial endeavors, Custer's career is even more productive as a gallery artist. Larger exhibition credits include the Annual Chicago Art Institute, the Two Annual Corcoran Exhibition, the Cincinnati Museum Celebration, the Brooklyn Museum of International Water Painting Exhibition, the Pennsylvania Academy's Annual Exhibition, and the Philadelphia Watercolors Club show, among others. He often shows works at exhibitions with the Gallery of Contemporary Art and Midtown Gallery of New York, including a single artist performance. Custer's works can be found in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Art Museum, the Brooklyn Art Museum, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Whitney Museum, the Detroit Art Institute, Addison's American Art Gallery and Williams College.

Mural

Custer was twice awarded a mural commission for the Funding Arts Project under the Roosevelt Administration's New Testament; the murals can be seen at Woodstock, VT and Summerville, SC post offices. He remains affiliated with the Treasury Art Project, and his descendants, the Federal Artist Project and the Public Works Arts Project, until they were dissolved in 1943. Custer's two watercolors are one of the federally sponsored artworks allocated to TW Wood Gallery in Montpelier, Vermont, and they remain in the permanent collection of this museum. Custer's preferred medium is a combination of pen-and-ink with watercolor, which allows it to add a sense of panic energy to its work. Like many female artists, the subject is often focused on the everyday environment.

Next year

Custer and her husband divide their time between New York City and Londonderry, VT, where they restored a farmhouse in 1840. In Vermont, Custer and Sharp are members of the dedicated Southern Vermont Art Center. Bernadine Custer died on 2 November 1991 in Ludlow, Vermont. After his death, he left the Londonderry farmhouse to the Londonderry Arts and Historical Society. The Londonderry Historical Society now runs Bernadine Custer Sharp House as a temporary gallery space during the summer months. The Historical Society also keeps a lot of artwork in their collections. Custer's personal letters can be found at the University of Vermont.
