Carl G. von Iwonski (1830-1912) was a German-born painter who became a naturalized American citizen. He is artistically active in San Antonio and New Braunfels, and is famous for his Texas pioneer portrait.

Carl G. von Iwonski was born 23 April 1830 in Hilbersdorf, Saxony, to former Prussian Army officer Leopold von Iwonski and his wife Marie (Kalinowska-Tshirski) von Iwonski. At age 15, he emigrated with his family to Texas with the Adelsverein settlers, descending in Galveston on December 18, 1845, from Johann Detthard.
The family initially settled on the streets of Castell and Mill in New Braunfels. Leopold von Iwonski sold his 320-hectare land grant and moved the family across the Guadalupe River from New Braunfels, to a settlement known as Neighborsville. Iwonski's house is on Old San Antonio Road and duplicated as a stop. Young Carl helped on family farms, and became a naturalized American citizen in 1854. His first known artistic endeavor was a sketch of 1853 from a family log cabin.

New Braunfels
Iwonski's first sketchbooks were known in 1855, to coincide with the opening of his studio in New Braunfels. Media he likes is pencil, ink, watercolors. He also made a portrait of German settler oil, and then became skilled as a sculptor. When Duke Paul Wilhelm of WÃÆ'ürttemberg visited New Braunfels on a visit in 1855, Iwonski gave him six pencil sketches from his Texas creations. From 1855-1857, he made a series of sketches from the New Braunfels Amateur Theater.
San Antonio
Iwonski moved to San Antonio in 1857 and in 1859 became associated with artist William DeRyee. Iwonski began sketching troops stationed in the southern Texas area during the Civil War. The most famous is The Terry's Rangers . He also became a teacher at the German-English Academy Bickler. From 1866-1870, Iwonski runs a San Antonio photography studio with artist Hermann Lungkwitz. In addition to his portrait, he began painting landscapes.
During Reconstruction, Carl von Iwonski became a city tax collector of San Antonio, and his father Leopold became treasurer of Bexar County. Both father and son became radical leaders in the local Republican party, and Carl began drawing political cartoons. Leopold von Iwonski died at the office on 15 October 1872.
Iwonski took a long vacation in 1871 to study at the Berlin Academy of Art.
Personal life and death
