Plot
Maggie Peyton (Lohan) is an aspiring car racer. Maggie's family includes her brother, Ray Jr., and her father, Ray Sr., who are members of their name racing team. Herbie, the Volkswagen Beetle, was drawn to the junkyard after losing several races, and Ray Sr. take Maggie to the junkyard to buy her a car as a college graduation gift. After Maggie chose Herbie, she found an anonymous note in Herbie's glove box, possibly written by the old owner Herbie, Jim Douglas (original Herbie owner of The Love Bug (1968) and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo ) which reads: " Please keep Herbie Whatever your problem, he will help you find the answer ". Herbie takes him against his wishes to the garage where his old friend Kevin works as a mechanic. Kevin had Maggie take Herbie to the auto show to buy components for Herbie, but when they arrived, Herbie tricks Maggie into disguising herself in racing clothes and helmets and challenging NASCAR champion Trip Murphy to an impromptu race, to which Herbie wins with both.
This is fun Kevin, who is trying to invite Maggie to race again. However, Ray Sr, who has banned him from racing since he was hospitalized after a road racing accident a few years ago, is worried. This also infuriated Trip, who became obsessed with Herbie. Trip organized a local street racing competition to lure Herbie back for a rematch, which Maggie and Kevin enter. Herbie easily defeated other cars and qualified for the final with Trip, but when Trip talked Maggie in a pink race (where the winner took possession of the opposing car), Herbie became worried over Maggie's desire to win the Trip shares car. In addition to being deeply hurt by Maggie's earlier statement that driving in a Trip car was the best ride of his life, Herbie mistakenly assumed that Maggie would refuse her if she won another car, and also did not realize that Trip only agreed with the game so that she could make Herbie destroyed if he has him. As a result, Herbie deliberately lost the race against the Trip Corvette C6 Z06 which caused Maggie to be humiliated, Herbie towed away by Trip, Kevin was let down by Maggie, and Ray Sr. gave Maggie a lecture for unauthorized races.
However, encouraged by his friend Charisma, Maggie decided to race professionally. He tries to buy Herbie back from Trip, but the journey has entered Herbie in a demolition derby. Desperate to save Herbie from destruction, Maggie goes to the derby, runs to the field while the derby is in progress, begging Herbie to help him, and win the derby.
Meanwhile, Tim Peyton may have to lose his car race-upcoming stocks due to financial problems and two accidents by Ray Jr., one of them leaving him with deep perception problems, making him unable to race. Ray Sr. refused Maggie's bid to drive the team, but Ray Jr. allowing him to replace him and send Tim Peyton's crew to help him and Kevin preparing Herbie for the race. On the track, Maggie and Herbie had a heart-to-heart conversation, and Trip frightenedly warned Maggie that the race would be dangerous.
Herbie started the race slowly, but he finally chased and started passing other cars before Maggie made his first pit stop. While watching the race at home, Ray Sr. decided to watch the race live. On the track again, Herbie was soon locked up by several other cars, but Ray Sr. arrives on the track and pushes Maggie through team radio, and Maggie escapes from the trap by driving directly over Tony Stewart who is in front of him. This damaged Herbie's oil system, so Maggie made another pit stop and Kevin hastily picked up a replacement part of the new Yellow Beetle, which Herbie had observed engrossedly throughout the movie, owned by Sally, one of several sponsors of Tim Peyton. remaining, replace it with Herbie. The jerry-rigged oil system is fragile, and Trip aims to prevent Herbie from winning.
With Maggie, Herbie, and Ray Sr now working together, Maggie and Herbie catch up to Trip. The journey tries to destroy Herbie by pushing him into the track wall as Maggie tries to pass him, but he gasps and crashes into the wall as he slams on the brakes during his next attempt, causing Trip's car to bounce off the wall and crash into Jeff Gordon's car, turning over. Herbie passes Trip's car, now upside down on the track, by climbing onto the fence above the wall and climbing up to the finish line. After landing back on the track, Maggie and Herbie win the race. Maggie was congratulated by her father and brother, and Trip was hospitalized when Maggie and Kevin kissed. Later, Ray Sr. warned Herbie and Sally New Beetle not to dating them too long. Herbie and his love then went into the night, ended the movie and rolled out the credits.
