The Olot school landscape painting was a group of painters who created an artistic style in the second half of the 19th century. This includes not only artists from Olot (in Catalonia, Spain), but all artists whose art works are inspired by the Olot countryside. With extensions, artists connect with Olot and his comarca, Garrotxa.

History

In Catalonia, the proliferation of paintings coincides with the Restoration, a period marked by the preferred economic prosperity of the bourgeoisie which is the motor of the cultural revival of Catalan nationalism. This bourgeoisie has a great influence in art; he sought realistic, yet fun, elegant, and optimistic art, and preferred painting to other artistic disciplines. During this period, several art schools began and consolidated, among them the Olot school.

The Olot school of landscape painting is similar to a Barbizon school. It was formed by Joaquim and Marian Vayreda with the help of RamÃÆ'³n MartÃÆ' Alsina. From this tradition emerges a new artistic concept: creating multiple versions of rural Olot, where the treatment of light and chromatic variations is an important element. The Olot School uses the Garrotxa countryside as a source of inspiration for their work, but with freedom of style. Vayreda's paintings attracted the attention of artists including LaureÃÆ' Barrau, Enric Galwey, Joan Brull, LluÃÆ's Masriera, Simple Urgell, Ramon Casas, and Santiago RusiÃÆ'Â ± ol, who went to Olot and also painted rural pictures.

The Olot School was supported by the founding of the Olot Art School (Escola d'Art d'Olot) in 1783 by the bishop of TomÃÆ'¡s de Lorenzana, and also by the creation of a workshop dedicated to the reproduction of religious images. The first workshop dedicated to this work, "El Arte Cristiano", was founded in 1880. The religious picture-making industry developed rapidly beginning around 1900 in Olot, and became an important part of the city's economy. Today, the old Arte Cristiano factory has been transformed into the Museum of Saints (Museo de los Santos).

The Olot School was instituted by the painter Josep Berga i Boix, who served as director of the Olot Art and Culture Center (founded by Vayreda) in 1869 and later as director of the School of Drawing (Escola PÃÆ'ºblica de Dibuix) of the 1877-1914. The annual exhibition was organized first by the Arts and Culture Center and then by another entity.

Many other artists then continued the tradition of Olot school, often practicing in the Public School of Drawing (called Escola de Belles Arts i Oficis beginning in 1939) under the direction of IvÃÆ'³ Pascual, MartÃÆ' Casadevall, Bartomeu Mas y Collellmir, and Joan VilÃÆ' i Moncau. Other artists included in this movement are Josep Berga i Boada, Josep ClarÃÆ', Melcior Domenge, and Josep PinÃÆ'³s.

Olot School today

The Drawing Festival (Fira del Dibuix) is celebrated annually at Olot on Sant Lluc Day. This festival brings together many artists who sell their work directly to the public. This festival was initiated mainly for the sale of works on paper, such as sketches, but it has recently been possible to find works of art in many media.

Since the 2003-2004 academic year, the Olot Art School (Escola d'Art d'Olot) has been called the College of Arts and Design (Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny), adding a degree in interior design; Graphic design title added in 2007-2008. Currently, there are over 400 enrolled students, mainly from neighboring comarcas.

Today, the term "Olot school" - or especially the term "Olot school of landscape painting" (not escola paisatgÃÆ'stica d'Olot) - is not well received, as not all artists connect with Olot's landscape , and not all artists are connected to school work or live in the city of Olot.
