Starlite is a material that is claimed to be able to withstand and protect from extreme heat. It was created by amateur chemist and hairdresser Maurice Ward (1933-2011) during the 1970s and 1980s, and received much publicity in 1993 thanks to coverage of Tomorrow's World science and technology events. The Starlite name was created by Ward's grandson, Kimberly.

Despite interest from NASA and other major technology companies, Ward never revealed the composition of Starlite, which is still unknown. Ward once mentioned that his immediate family knew the process of making, but after his death, neither his wife nor his four daughters made a sample to show that they knew the process.

However, Firepaste by Troy Hurtubise may be a substance of similar nature.

Under the test, Starlite is claimed to be able to withstand attacks by laser light that can produce a temperature of 10,000 degrees Celsius. Live demonstrations at Tomorrow's World and BBC Radio 4 show that Starlite can store raw (coated) eggs, and cold enough to be taken with bare hands, even after five minutes of torch attacks.. It will also prevent the torch from damaging the human hand.

The former Chief Scientific Advisor for Defense Department Sir Ronald Mason noted, "Maurice sometimes speaks scientific shoemaker, but this is really the most remarkable material".

Material scientist Mark Miodownik describes Starlite as one of the materials he most wanted to see for himself.

NASA spokeswoman Rudi Narangor said of their discussions with Ward, "We've done a lot of evaluations and...... we know all the wonderful possibilities this material has."

Commercialization

Ward allows organizations such as Atomic Weapons Establishment and ICI to test samples, but does not allow them to store samples for fear of reverse engineering. Ward stated that his invention was worth billions and he insisted he retained 51% ownership of the formula - a move that might hamper Starlite commercialization.

Although Ward admits to discussions with organizations such as NASA, he is very protective of compositions for fear of losing control of the right to material (not even letting the sample out of sight). At the time of his death in May 2011, there seems to be no Starlite commercialization, and material formulations have not been released to the public. According to the 2016 broadcast of the BBC's The Naked Scientists program, Ward took his secret when he died.

In 2011, anonymous contributors to The Guardian's Notes & amp; The question section says that the main problem is that Starlite comes in powder form which must be mixed with PVA glue to be coated, but it has a very limited life span. He also said that "this is the real reason why Mr. Ward can never sell or bring his incomplete product to market." This contributor also claims that there is at least one other complete and superior product that underwent tests when he published his comments.

Composition

The Starlite composition is a closely guarded secret, but it is said to contain various polymers (organic) and co-polymers with organic and inorganic additives, including borate and a small amount of ceramics and other special barrier materials - up to 21 in all. May be unique to materials claimed as thermal and blast-proof, claimed to be not entirely inorganic but up to 90 percent organic.
