Yellow House (Dutch: Het gele huis ) , an alternative named The Street (Dutch: De straat

The house is the right wing of 2 Place Lamartine, Arles, France, where, on 1 May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms. He occupies two large ones on the ground floor to serve as an atelier and kitchen, and on the first floor, two smaller ones overlooking Place Lamartine. The first floor window near the corner with the two open windows was Van Gogh's guest room, where Paul Gauguin stayed for nine weeks from the end of October 1888. Behind the next window, with a closed shutter, was Van Gogh's bedroom. The two small rooms in the back are rented by Van Gogh at a later time.

Van Gogh pointed out that the restaurant, where he used to eat, was in a pink painted building near the left edge of the painting (28th Place Lamartine). It's run by Widow Venissac, who is also Van Gogh's landlady, and who has several other buildings depicted. To the right of the Yellow House, Avenue Montmajour flows to two railway bridges. The first row, with the train just passing, serves local connections to Lunel, which is across (ie, right) RhÃÆ'Â'ne river banks. Another line is owned by P.-L.-M. Railway Company ( Paris Lyon MÃÆ'Ã… © ditranÃÆ' Â © e ) On the front to the left, there is an indication of the corner of the pedestrian street, which surrounds one of the public parks at Place Lamartine. The gutter that runs Avenue Montmajour from left to the bridge serves the gas pipeline, which allows Van Gogh a little later to have a gas lamp installed in his atelier.

The building was badly damaged in an Allied bomb attack on June 25, 1944, and was later destroyed.

Genesis

The painting was executed in September 1888, when Van Gogh sent a sketch of the composition to his brother Theo:.

Also a sketch of 30 square canvas representing the house and its settings under sulfur sun under a pure cobalt sky. The theme is very difficult! But that's why I want to conquer it. Because it is fantastic, the houses are yellow in the sun and also the unrivaled blue freshness. All the ground is yellow too. I will soon send you a better picture than this sketch from my head.

The house on the left is yellow with green shutters. It is shaded by a tree. This is the restaurant where I eat every day. My friend, the factor is at the end of the road on the left, between two railroad bridges. The night cafe I painted is not in the picture, it is to the left of the restaurant.

Milliet finds this terrible, but I do not have to tell you that when he says he does not understand that one can have fun doing general grocery store stores and houses are rigid and worthless without grace, but I remember that Zola did a certain boulevard at the beginning of L'assommoir , and Flaubert corner of the Villette embankment in the dog days at the beginning of Bouvard and PÃÆ'Ã… © cuchet who will not sneeze.

Originally, Van Gogh named the painting as The house and its surroundings (France: La Maison et son of the entourage ). Then he chose a more meaningful title and called it The Street (French: La Rue ), paying honors a sketch showing the streets of Paris, by Jean-François RaffaÃÆ'Â «lli, and recently published at Le Figaro .

Pedigree

This painting never leaves the artist's estate. Since 1962, it has been owned by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation, founded by Vincent Willem van Gogh, nephew of the artist, and a permanent loan to the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.

Since the 1940s

The Yellow House itself no longer exists. It was severely damaged in a bomb attack during the Second World War, and was later destroyed. A place without a home looks almost the same. A plaque at the scene commemorates its previous existence.
