Red House Painters is an American rock band, formed in San Francisco, California in 1988. They are one of the most prominent actions associated with slowcore/sadcore subgenres. Fronted by Mark Kozelek's main songwriter (vocals, guitar), the band also includes drummer Anthony Koutsos and guitarist Jerry Vessel. Guitarist Gorden Mack and Phil Carney performed with the band for a separate six year period.
In 2001, Red House Painters quietly disbanded, with Koutsos, Vessel and Carney continuing to record and perform with Kozelek under the guise of his new Sun Kil Moon until 2010.

While in Atlanta, Georgia, Ohio-born Kozelek befriends Anthony Koutsos, a drummer. He then moved to San Francisco, California, adding guitarist Gorden Mack and bassist Jerry Vessel to complete the line-up for Red House Painters. After forming, the group played the San Francisco scene extensively, and recorded a demo from 1989 to 1992. The band was signed into 4AD in 1992, on the demo tape power that was passed down to 4AD boss Ivo Watts-Russell by American Music Club frontman Mark Eitzel.
Journalist Martin Aston delivered the recording Mark Eitzel gave him. Never before or since I received a 90 minute demo! Actually, that was long enough before I actually listened to everything. Every morning and afternoon, driving to and from work, I'll start from scratch, "24" (I know, I know, what else do you need to hear, right? What a song.), But just get about halfway through it and whatever the second song on the tape before arriving at home/in 4AD. When I finally heard the full 90 minutes, I called Mark K. and left a message for him. I learned later he sat in the bathroom listening to me speak. This is the right time for me to hear the brilliant band.
Between September 1992 and March 1995, the band released three LPs, one double LP, and one EP. Their first 4AD release was an album consisting of a demo titled Down Colorful Hill . In 1993, the group came out with two self-titled albums (now commonly referred to as Rollercoaster and Bridge because of their cover artwork).
In early 1994, they released an EP titled Shock Me , featuring two cover versions of the KISS song written by Ace Frehley. The introspective of Ocean Beach was followed in spring 1995. Guitarist co-founder Gorden Mack left shortly after the album's release, and he was replaced shortly thereafter by Phil Carney.
While Kozelek began working on a solo project, he parted ways with 4AD after a tumultuous relationship, so the Song for the Blue Guitar was finally released on Records Island subsidiary Supreme Recordings/Polygram in the summer of 1996. The album featured a guitar congestion long and closing songs, and is the band's biggest seller in the US. In early 1998, their sixth album finished. However, the band began to dissolve, and major merger labels during the late 1990s will leave records in limbo; it was not until 2001 that Old Ramon was issued on a Sub Pop label.

Dissolution and post-break
Before releasing Old Ramon , Kozelek released a seven-track solo EP titled Rock 'n' Roll Singer in 2000. The record consists of three original acoustic compositions with minor full-band settings and four covers (three of Bon Scott-era AC/DC, and John Denver's "Around and Around") which further reveals Kozelek's fascination with classic 1970s rock. Six months later, Kozelek released his first solo album, What's Next to the Moon , composed entirely of acoustic covers from AC/DC Bon Scott era songs, including a re-recorded version of the tracks that appeared on previous EPs. The record was unusual from Kozelek (though he tended to cover the songs by his favorite artist) because it was one of his shortest short albums to date, taking more than thirty minutes. EP and album released by Badman Recordings.
4AD will release the best-of, Retrospective package in July 1999. Kozelek later contributed to The Shanti Project Collection's AIDS album , and set up and appeared on Take Me Home: A Tribute to John Denver , a tribute album of John Denver (along with like-minded artists like Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Low, and The Innocence Mission). He also tried acting, playing a small part in the nearly-famous Cameron Crowe movie and Vanilla Sky, and performed more prominently as a rock musician with Jason Schwartzman in 2005 Steve Martin's Vehicles > Shopgirl .
Phil Carney occasionally joined Kozelek on a tour date, playing the second guitar. Drummer Anthony Koutsos is also a real estate agent in San Francisco.
Sun Kil Moon
In 2003, Kozelek and Koutsos, along with Geoff Stanfield and Tim Mooney, reformed as Sun Kil Moon, released the famous album Ghosts of the Great Highway on Jetset Records. In a 2005 interview with AV Club's Kozelek asserted that Sun Kil Moon is basically a continuation of Red House Painters, but he changed the band's name to attract the attention of critics who are bored with, or stop paying attention, the band before.
