Histori
Shortly before marriage in 1942, Reynolds and Eleanor Morse attended the Dalà ret retrospective at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Intrigued by the artist's subject, and impressed by the design, they bought their first painting a year later. This purchase begins a 40-year relationship as a patron and friends of Dala who produced a comprehensive collection of original Dala works.
Until 1971, Morses showed their collection at their home in Cleveland, Ohio. When they borrowed more than 200 pieces for retrospective DalÃÆ'à © in 1965, they realized that the 25-year-old gathering produced a mini-retrospective that required a permanent home.
In March 1971, with Salvador DalÃÆ' leading the opening, Morses opened a museum adjacent to their office building in Beachwood, Ohio. At the end of the decade with an extraordinary number of visitors, the Morses decided to re-move their collections.
After the retrieved search attracted national attention, a warehouse in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida was rehabilitated and the museum opened on 7 March 1982.
In mid 2008, a new location for the Dali museum was announced. Designed by Yann Weymouth of the HOK architectural firm and built by The Beck Group under the leadership of then-CEO Henry C. Beck III, it is built on the edge of the city center next to Mahaffey Theater, in the former Bayfront Center location, the arena that was destroyed in 2004.
The larger and safer new museum from the storm opened on January 11, 2011.
Rumored to cost more than $ 30 million, this structure features a large glass entrance and skylights made of 1.5 inch thick glass. Referred to as "Enigma", the glass entrance is 75 feet tall and includes a spiral staircase. The remaining wall consists of 18 inch thick concrete, designed to protect the collection from hurricanes.
The museum is a member of the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) and the North American Reciprocal Museum program.
