Truck bed or just Bedliner is a product that protects the inside of the truck bed from damage and can also make a slip-resistant surface allowing the cargo to remain in place, depending on the circumstances. There are two broad bedliner classifications: "Drop-in" and "Spray-on/in". The "drop-in" bed is easily applied to the truck bed without the need for preparation, and can easily be moved also to be cleaned. Spray-in bedliners require special preparation to allow the coating to adhere properly to the bed; the better the coating layer will determine how long it will last.

Protecting the truck bed has been around since the start of a modern pick-up truck in the early 50's with simple modifications made like putting wooden planks onto the bed. The F100 series from Ford displays such options, although it is now done only for cosmetic or restoration purposes. People have also been known to install a simple piece of wood as a tool to protect the floor from scratches or dents. Since pickup trucks are designed to transport cargo, a more sophisticated method is developed. Thermoforming, a technique that has existed since the 1940s in acrylic and styrene will eventually go through progress in the development and research of creating the first plastic dropliner in plastic liner in 1983 by Penda Corporation. Also during that time another type of product is being used that will eventually make its way into the truck market. In 1983, Morgan Evans founder Rhinolinings in Johannesburg, South Africa originally used a urethane product that applied it to rail cars and shipping vehicles, was the first to make a spray product that was applied for vehicle protection. Then in 1986, Charles Hibberd, a native of Johannesburg immigrated to Santa Fe, California carrying chemicals and raw equipment, set up shop and was the first to introduce spray bedliner to the US. Shortly after Charles Hibberd's arrival to the United States, other South Africans will follow. In 1987, Russell Lewis, founder of Rhinolinings Corporation and the citizens of Johannesburg also began bedding in southern California inspired by Charles Hibberd, although his company would become a household industry standard. The Hibberd company known today as Arma International, INC originally named Arma Linings finally materialized into Arma Coatings after realizing the use of materials outside the trucking market as well as the creator of high-pressure spray-on bedliner introduced in 1991. Working with Ezzat Seif chemist and modifying foam machine such as Graco Foam-Cat 200 that can process materials, refine the system through trial and error of what we have today.

Drop-in bedliners
Drop-in or plastic bedliners are the most common type found, although with the spray-on bedliner industry collecting recognition, the drop-in has lost some value in market share. Drop-ins can usually be installed rather quickly without major modifications made to truck beds unless drilling a small hole in the main area to hold it in place in certain applications. Typically made of polyethylene composites, the drop-in is a rigid structure formed for the contour of a particular vehicle model. The latest version of the recently introduced dropliner bedliner consists of separate sides and rubber floor mats made by DualLiner.

"Sprayed-on", "Spray-in", "Spray-on", "Spray-in" (these terms are used interchangeably in industry) come in various formulations and process methods such as high or low pressure, aromatic or aliphatic , polyuria or polyurethane, or hybrid base and solvent. Performance is highly dependent on the initial surface preparations performed on the bed. It is possible to have the color of nightwear that fits the vehicle, but with time, the fading colors of ultraviolet radiation are inevitable.
Aromatics are generally used for black and dark colors, and are the least expensive option.
Aliphatics can be a better choice for color because the colors are more stable over time in ultraviolet light. It is manufactured with pure polyurethane, which raises the cost by about 35%. Aliphatic materials can be sprayed in various colors, including metallic touches.
Spray-on bedliners can be applied with rollers, low pressure, cartridges driven by air compressors or high pressure machines.
Environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, wind, and altitude may affect the spray-in-bedliner healing process. The aperture, thinner, and spray nozzle can be modified to allow the proper distribution of chemicals.
Differences bedlin spray
Spray-on bedliner material can vary in texture as well as color. The texture can be smooth to easy to clean or rough to prevent slipping.
Polyurethane can be sprayed from 1/16 inch to 4 inches, depending on the application. Thin layers may be cheaper but can chip and crack. Thick layers destroy the shape and size of truck beds. For the truck with the most rugged use, ArmorThane sets the optimal thickness for the bedliner as 1/4 inch in the bed and the well wheel and 1/8 inch on the sides.
When applied correctly, the value of the truck bed is that it can not hold, scratch, and hold the shape firmly, yet flexible enough not to crack when navigating through rough terrain. Unlike a metal bed, it absorbs the vibrations to protect the cargo. While the painted metal will harden and rust in rough conditions, the polyurethane layer prevents damage from scratches and from most chemicals, and therefore avoids rust.
Spray on a truck bedliner requires professional applicators who have the training and experience to follow the process and provide a smooth, even surface. This process requires sanding to create a surface for polyurethane to adhere. This allows the polyurethane to bind permanently so it will not bulge even in extreme weather.
The choice of color is almost unlimited. System color matching spray for OEM or owner specifications can choose custom colors. Adding an ultraviolet stabilizer preserves its appearance even in prolonged direct sunlight.
Spray-on bedliner material for other uses
This spray-on polyurethane coating is not just for truck bedliners. They also protect the fenders, bumpers, floor boards, nerf rods and trims. In fact, all vehicles have been sprayed. The same polyurethane spray can be applied to emergency vehicles, commercial transportation, heavy construction, farm equipment and boats.
Squirting polyurethane serves two purposes. First, it adds more work by preventing scratching, rusting, and chemicals contamination from standard OEM pain deterioration. Second, it can create a rough surface, anti-skid or anti-slip.
Some polyurea coatings, using a similar spray system, have been applied to military and personal vehicles for explosive mitigation.
The MythBusters tested myths about bedliners in 2011 and confirmed them as adequate protection against dents in small accidents (applied to cars), dog bites (applied to jackets) and explosive explosions (applied to wooden or stone walls brick).
