The Last Drop is an oil painting by Judith Leyster in the John G. Johnson collection from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was regarded as the work of Frans Hals until 1903, when it was known that it was signed 'JL *' on the tankard.

Provenance

The painting was together with Leyster's Merry Trio in a collection of British dealers/auction house Sir George Donaldson (1845-1925) where it was documented in 1903. Both may be pendants, since they were later reported to have the same size same. It was sold to Johnson in 1908 where it was documented by Juliane Harms, though at that time the skeletal moralization figure had been painted and the lamp standing in its place.

According to Hofrichter, the scene shows a general vanity theme with an upside tankard and a cigarette pipe to show that the party has ended. The framework holds an hourglass to emphasize that time is up at the party, but also on the lives of those present. In contrast, the daytime view of The Merry Trio serves to show that true delicacy can be found in moderation. Hofrichter only knows the framework of x-ray images. The painting has been restored and the overpaint removed, revealing the skeleton.
